Product Description

Product Description

Drawing Projects: An Exploration of the Language of Drawing is both a practical guide to drawing and an informative insight into the minds of artists who work with the medium. Drawing Projects profiles ten key artists and illustrators revealing their working environments and practices including Dryden Goodwin, Cornelia Parker, Claude Heath, William Kentridge and Keith Tyson. Each artist comments on the value of drawing in their own work, opening up discussions on how we view life, art and the story that is told when the two are combined. Drawing Projects includes 15 projects for the reader to join in and work through at their own pace, including detailed tutorials and instructions on how to draw these images. They also go beyond that to advise on the mental skills required to become a proficient drawer by seeing beyond subjects as recognisable objects, and instead appreciate the abstract form of the world around us. Full of handy tips and useful details, with colour illustrations and photographs to engage the reader throughout, as well as a glossary of technical terms and precise information on drawing materials and techniques; Drawing Projects is a practical guide to drawing and an informative insight into the minds of artists and contemporary practitioners of drawing. As such, Drawing Projects will inspire enthusiasts and beginners alike by bringing this popular medium to life in a relevant, contemporary way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greater Understanding, 31 July 2011
This review is from: Drawing Projects: An Exploration of the Language of Drawing (Paperback)
This is a must have for young artists! After reading the first few pages I had a better understanding of myself, I now know why I feel that I never surpasss myself, why I find that my drawings aren't as good as I originally thought, and why, up to a year ago, I thought that my work was no good unless it resembled a photograph. It makes references to fantastic artists, just seeing their work and reading about them is enough to inspire me to start drawing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting and relevant, 9 Aug 2011
This review is from: Drawing Projects: An Exploration of the Language of Drawing (Paperback)
The scope of the content and detail of Drawing Projects is amazing!
The book is beautifully illustrated, a pleasure to hold and look at - a real book lover's book.

It presents drawing in an accessible way because it focuses on practice, process and individual development from the beginning. I like the way it does not claim to be a sweeping study of the field - it's all about making drawing work for the individual.

It examines a huge diversity of drawing practices. Interviews with practising artists are interspersed throughout, bringing the ideas/projects to life. It is just brimming with energy, activity and points of departure - I'm sure it will inspire a lot of people to start or revisit drawing, whether they are starting out or more established.

Each reader can use Drawing Projects in a different way - you don't feel like you have to plough through the book to get at a nugget of someone else's wisdom; you read for your self and own needs. It emphasises drawing as artistic practice: a personal, ongoing, evolving and pleasurable activity.

It's a book I can see myself dipping into and referring back to again and again. I have not encountered another book like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A leap forward for art, 24 Aug 2011
This review is from: Drawing Projects: An Exploration of the Language of Drawing (Paperback)
This is a genuinely innovative approach to writing about the creation of art - never easy. It succeeds in bridging the "how to" teaching, and the conceptual, inspiratoinal, imaginative and deeply personal artistic experience.

Drawing (making marks) was probably the first truely human activity, and defines the beginning of the human mind. It is the basis for all creativity, which is underlined again and again by the artists' contributions in the book. They show how versatile and wideranging the drawing activity is, and how it can morph into other mediums and dimensions. We see how intrinsic drawing is to child development, and how this needs to be valued in everyone, not just those who grow up to become "artists".

We are given an insight into how students (like everyone) can use the excellant guides to drawing in the book to fire their imaginations, rather than just be overwelmed by artificially set "standards". Add to that the uniquely revealing conversations with significant and diverse professional artists, and this becomes a real voyage of artistic discovery.

But it doesn't have to be read from start to finish in a set order. It is also good to dip into, especially tempting given the excellant and prolific illustrations. It is exiting to have this artwork gathered together in one book, especially one which also offers the chance of further self-development to the reader.
