Book Description

1 Sep 2009 Masterclass in Drawing & Paint
An understanding of the various natural forms is vital to successful landscape art. Abigail Edgar's expert tutorials provide this knowledge, from which readers can go on to work through the step-by-step projects. The stages of each artwork are fully explained, so that students can follow along and learn the essential methods artists use to observe and capture a vista on paper or canvas. The tutorials and 31 projects are complemented by galleries of professional art with commentaries by expert art writer Sarah Hoggett. After working through the tutorials , projects and galleries and making use of the information about materials, amateur artists will be able to produce their own studies of natural and man made landscapes.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT - BUT BEWARE ! 14 Oct 2012
By Jeff Walmsley TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I'm the first to admit that landscapes are not my forte, so I tend to buy a lot of landscape books to support my efforts to improve; and not all of them are as good as this one, which, on first handling, is encouragingly heavy - always a good start for any art book.

A note of caution, however; this is one of those potentially irritating volumes which comprise extracts from several previous books issued by the same publisher, and if you have already bought one or more of these, you are likely to feel very cross. As is so often the case, the book description fails to mention this, which, as I have remarked before, is tantamount to attempted fraud; Amazon, authors and publisher, please take note...

The previous books from which this compilation is assembled are "The practical encyclopaedia of drawing", "The practical encyclopaedia of watercolour", "The practical encyclopaedia of Acrylics, oils and gouache" and "How to paint and draw".

I give the book 5 stars nevertheless, because it really is very good in its own right, quite possibly better than the sum of its parts, so to speak, and happily, I don't have any of the others. Many run of the mill, how-to-do-it, landscape books are packed with simple demonstrations by the author which make no pretence at artistic excellence - they aim simply to illustrate technique, useful, but less than inspiring. This book, by contrast, contains examples of individual works by a wide variety of prominent artists and well-known tutors, about 30 at a quick count, and including such luminaries as Timothy Easton, Mike Bernard, Jackie Simmons, David Curtis, Ian Sidaway, and Doug Dawson - just a few picked at random.
