Product Description

Product Description
Rather than being an inspirational book for beginners, this book is aimed squarely at the serious artist or art student. As well as providing the means to understand the hows and whys of picture-making, it will teach the reader what they need to know to paint their own images well and with confidence. The book aims to provide the reader with a firm grasp of the fundamentals of drawing and painting as well as a good introduction to materials. It will also provide access to some of the best artists working today. The book works on the assumption that rules are meant to be broken, and it will provide the reader with an understanding of when and how to break them. Organised into four chapters, Basics of Art, Elements of Landscape, Creating Fantasy Realms, and The Gallery, it will reveal how a great painting does not just happen; it is crafted.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the serious artist, 26 Oct 2007
By Laxon (England) - See all my reviews
This book covers a great deal to do with landscapes, settings, mood, composition, perspective, and basically how to convay that vision you have in your head, faithfully, in your choosen medium. It is certainaly NOT a how to book for beginners. However even though I have been doodling, scibbling and general all round basic mark making, for a good few years now, in the name of Art; I found this book very usefull.
Yes it covers a lot I already knew from exsperience but, there was still plenty in this book I didn't know or hadn't even concidered yet.

The only reason it does not have 5 stars is that in some parts of the book it gets a little unclear and confusing about what it is trying to convay. ( Nothing beats face to face conduct between artists when discussing art techniques )However it is indeed a very good book.

I will be buying this book very shorty, however, first I need to take this book back to the local library.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I wanted., 15 Feb 2009
By A. Corbett "AJC" (Leics) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was really looking for a how to book, as I was teaching children about fantasy landscapes. The book is full of lovely pictures and different ideas to look at but I wanted something a lot more practical. I'm sure this book would be great for some one who was already very proficent at the form.
