Learn to draw amazingly realistic portraits in seven easy stages

This book is the perfect guide for creating lifelike representations of the human head in graphite. Experienced artist Lance Richlin begins by explaining drawing tools and materials, shading techniques, and the important anatomical structures of the head. Following these basics, he shows how to light the subject, block in and render each feature of the face, and address a variety of expressions-from subtle smiles to toothy grins. Then he guides the reader through four impressive projects, showing how to develop a lifelike head drawing in seven simple stages: the lay-in, plumb lines, volume, outline, tonal pattern, value, and finishing. Readers also will find an in-depth troubleshooting section to help them identify and solve any problems that lessen the realism and accuracy of their drawings. In an age full of technological shortcuts, this book emphasizes drawing from life and seeks to preserve the methods of the old masters.

About the Author

A master of drawing, painting, and sculpture, Lance Richlin has taught every aspect of classical art from anatomy and perspective to traditional oil painting techniques. He has lectured at several art colleges in southern California, and has had his work exhibited in museums around the USA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lifelike heads 16 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
I would have paid twice the price for this book. Its only failings in my view are that (a) it does not explain the techniques of blending the graphite in enough detail, (b) it assumes that you are not a complete novice to drawing heads, and (c) all the portraits are from front on. Being self-taught I can relate to the methods that the author uses, but I would have appreciated having more portraits from different angles. Having said that I think it is an excellent book, and one that fills a hole in my knowledge. As long as you feel comfortable with a pencil in your hand, it is well worth having.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book 6 gold stars 18 Feb 2014

this book is excellent, apart from one little fault, when describing the polishing technique, she has writen the instructions like you know what she is talking about, instead of explaining it for idiots. think this book is american and the wording only a american would understand. apart from this the book is excellent and the results you can achive are out of this world and an easy book to follow with projects to complete, the best book i'd had in ages. would recommend this book to others. if you get this book please past on what she means with the polishing you will understand when you read it, or it me that thick

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book! 19 Feb 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was amazed at how this helped my twelve year old daughter, after just a short read. She was quite pleased and has kept a 'before' the book picture to compare with a drawing she has made after her first look at the instructions. Amazing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good drawing reference 29 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I draw portraits as a hobby, and sometimes they come out pretty decent. However I always struggle with getting proportion and realism. Lance is pretty good at pointing out how to observe anatomical structure, and defines several steps to take to get a decent drawing from laying in a plumb line to measuring negative space and shading. There are around 7 different kinds of shadows that I learned about from this book.

I would recommend it as a useful guide to better portrait drawing. It's not expensive but is very helpful. Lance's drawings shown in this book demonstrates how good an artist he really is.

This is a book every artist should have for reference and a great help for any person just starting to draw. For me it helped confirm just how i should be going about the basic structure at the start of a drawing, something I have been told in the past but frequently sail on in my own fashion with a disappointing end result. This book has helped look at my own failings.
