Product Description

Product Description

This is a practical easy-to-follow guide, which shows how to observe and draw light and shade. Giovanni Civardi shares his great expertise in drawing light and shade, beginning with the basics of drawing simple 3D shapes. There are sections on shadows and cast shadows, simplifying tone, methods of shading, form and relief, composition, the perspective of shadows and many more. We also learn a little bit about how light and shade have been used throughout the history of art. Finally the artist shows through his own superb drawings how the techniques and principles learned can be put into practice. This book also includes step-by-step demonstrations. It offers clear instructions on using tone and shadow.

very helpful 29 Jun 2011

Since I got this book everything related to light and shade makes much more sense!, I've always have problems with this matter, that's why my drawing appeared quite flat, but this book has taught me some basic things that is making a big difference.
I would recommend to anybody with not much knowledge about how light and shade works. I think is one of those books you have to have as it explains very basic things, because you can never build up something if you don't have the basics first!

Unlock Chiaroscuro! 23 April 2008
Format:Paperback
I am a fan of Giovanni Civardi's teaching books- this was my first. He is a true artist and demonstrates this essential skill well. His style is based primarily on demonstration with maybe to few words, but in some ways this works well with his style and lets face it artists being highly visual don't want masses of text! You will definately develop a good understanding of light and shade with this book.

Learning the Value of Value (Shading) 23 Dec 2009
By Jane Innes - Published on Amazon.com

This book really delves into the critical element called value (light and darks). Knowledge of value is critical for all visual art. It is key to composition and this book does a good job of helping new artists achieve this understanding.

kind of small... 30 Oct 2008
By evil genius - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I did enjoy reading this book but it is very thin. It didn't really teach me anything that I haven't read in other basic drawing books somewhere. It's more like an overview/refresher maybe :) I don't regret buying it though it wasn't bad, just kind of light...

Master of light and Shade 12 Aug 2009
By D. Ridgeway - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
What can I say here. Giovanni Civardi is brilliant. I also have his Complete Guide to Drawing, which every would be artist should own. If follow his instruction in this book and his Complete Guide to Drawing, you will improve your art immensley. With some dedicated practise, my rendering improved 200% in two weeks. Buy both of these books.
