Book Description

26 Sep 2011
This essential publication reintroduces the importance of learning to see by hand, to visualize large-scale design schemes and explain them through drawing, before using the digital tools that are so crucial to efficient and cost-effective building solutions. Combining traditional drawing techniques with those from CAD rendering, in nine chapters, Drawing for Landscape Architecture guides practitioners from their very first impression of a site, through concept and schematic design and client presentation to construction and site drawings, concluding with two case studies that show the final result. Just as hand-drawing returns to design courses around the world, this welcome publication celebrates the best aspects of traditional techniques while incorporating them into todays digital design methods.

Review

Someone at the publisher should have insisted on "Sketch to Screen" as the most accurate title for this invaluable "how to" guide to drawing. While hundreds of Hutchison's delightful sketches and finished drawings for large-scale projects are indeed centered in landscape architecture, the deep value of this text resides in his instructive method of transitioning from (largely) color pencil sketching to digital design. This method is applicable to every flavor of architecture and design, and only the most digitally addicted need refuse Hutchison's inviting manual of how to design grandly, thinking initially with color pencil in hand. --ArchNewsNow.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and informative 9 Mar 2012

Considering the current shift back to hand drawing, this book is riding the wave. The author is a competent artist and his approach to landscape design from site analysis to detail specification is interesting and inspiring. As someone who has been from the drawing board to the screen and back again, it's refreshing to see that once again these techniques are being recognised as a human and direct way of communicating ideas rather than an out dated way of working. The application of hand drawn images with digital ones is potentially very exciting and it is this message which the book conveys most strongly to me.

A beautiful and inspirational book showing how drawing can be a source of creativity and a means of effective communication. This is a vital read for students of landscape architecture and a reminder to practitioners that landscape design can be more than Autocad drawings and Photoshop collage.

Draw. Draw. And Draw. Until you become a drawing.
Well, this amazing book is full with inspirations.
The author clearly states the importance of site observations through the use of hand drawn sketches for more comprehensive understanding of the surrounding objects.
I received this book as a Christmas gift, and I can spend hours and hours reading it.
