Book Description

"Drawing Cartoons" provides invaluable support for anyone who has ever dreamed of drawing cartoons, but lacks the confidence. Taking the approach that anyone can draw, the author leads the reader through the steps of putting together cartoon figures, showing, for example, how a simple box shape can be transformed into a cartoon dog, or how a basic stick figure can convey a range of emotions. The book contains interviews with professional cartoonists who are household names, such as 'Mac' of "The Daily Mail", 'Matt' of "The Telegraph", and Gerald Scarfe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! 26 July 2010
Format:Paperback
This is the cartooning book I have been waiting for. I have tried a lot of different cartooning books, but none have given me the tools or confidence to give it a try, until this one! Its style is humorous, light and encouraging.

Colin Shelbourne believes anyone with a pencil and a piece of paper can be a cartoonist, and when you've read this book you will too. The book takes you through the basic requirements to take up cartooning (pencils and papers), right up to computer programmes and hardware recommendations, should you wish to take things further.

Unlike other books it is not prescriptive, showing you only how to draw specific things, but gives you techniques which can be applied to drawing anything you like.

There are also some interviews with professional cartoonists, giving some fascinating insights to their different approaches, and food for thought.

This book has undone the damage done in school art classes. I have started sketching again (in blue pencil), and have been pleasantly surprised by the results. I have also been able to help my children with their drawing.

I will probably never be a professional cartoonist, but I am having fun with drawing. I thoroughly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Class Guide to Drawing Cartoons 28 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
Here it is - the guide to drawing cartoons I have waited for all my life. Vindicating the stick people I drew before I could write, it's now leading me on to flesh out those figures and turn them into real characters. My kitchen table is littered with sheets of paper covered in cartoons from babies to old men, dogs to dinosaurs - and I'm still only halfway through, but engrossed, fascinated and reluctant to lay down my pencil. I look at people in a different way now, noticing the shapes of their faces and bodies and thinking how their expressions could be shown in cartoon form. The little tricks such as the 'floating eye' make all the difference, and the guidance is throughout chatty, friendly and encouraging.

This is the most fun I have had since I acquired my dog. Buy it for anyone - for your grandchild, or your grandmother. And definitely buy it for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book - highly recommended! 17 Oct 2010

Format:Paperback
I can recommend this book to anyone interested in drawing cartoons or just drawing in general. I found it very well written; it was very informative and yet very easy to read as well - I even found myself reading it just for fun on the train back home after a long day at the office.
The book is well set up and gives very clear explanations, mixed with nice little exercises which are easy to follow and fun to do. I liked the friendly, positive attitude of the book in general; it is all very down to earth with zero fussiness or snobbishness. There are lots of amusing little personal comments and anecdotes throughout the text and I also loved reading the interviews with various (UK based) professional cartoonists.
Although more experienced cartoonists might already know some of the basics outlined in this book (that's just a guess though), I think it is still a book anyone, regardless of their level of experience, would like to have in their collection.
So: definitely buy the book - it's worth it!
