Product Description

Two years in the making, with more that 60 demo tracks recorded, Drawing Breath is the highly anticipated follow up to Blue Touch Paper s debut album Stand Well Back an album warmly received by the press and the subject of some stunning reviews. Continuing the Blue Touch Paper soundscape, Drawing Breath once again demonstrates an adventurous, visionary and powerful way forward, something we have come to expect from band-leader Colin Towns. Although the trademark cinematic moments, elements of jazz, rock and classical music are present as they were on Stand Well Back , Drawing Breath demonstrates a developing energy within the band, with powerful compositions that continue to push the band forward both technically and creatively.

Review

Towns music is a rich brew of Miles Davis-like funk, minimalistic energy and gleeful piano vamps. --The Telegraph

…catchy hooks, knotty rhythms and moodscapes… --Mojo

If you thought this band's debut, Stand Well Back, bursted with energy, then prepare for even more pyrotechnics from Towns' extraordinary band. Six months in the making...all that devotion pays off spectacularly...there's a sense of flourish and an eye for detail that makes Drawing Breath more intriguing with every play...but most of all this is a band relishing its own verve, own confidence and own explosive talents - **** --Andy Robson, Jazzwise, November 2013

The debut album, Stand Well Back, was good, but its successor is better with the band (including Polar Bear saxophonist Mark Lockheart and Troyka guitarist Chris Montague) sounding creatively settled, the rhythms more edgily contemporary, and nothing within miles of a flat track out of all 12 here. Towns mixes his ingredients with a poise worthy of Gil Evans, as he does with the flouncing sax/guitar theme, tenor solo and percussion and handclapping sounds on Attention Seeker, with tenor, guitar and piano on the blaring, hooky Isadora, or the lost-in-space soprano sax atmosphere of Miles Davis' In a Silent Way on the finale. There are wild tangos, brooding Iberian folk melodies, churchy choral sounds, tongue-in-cheek rock piano, and an atmosphere of youthful exuberance that shows how much Towns the old-hand visionary and his new recruits are now inspiring each other - ***** --John Fordham, The Guardian, October 18th 2013

Colin Towns has again made an impressive album. For small group, (keyboards, tenor sax, bass and drums) the outstanding arranging and compositional skills which characterise his writing for large combinations are again on display. The album exhibits a wide range of expression and mood. In addition Mark Lockheart on tenor contributes fine solos. Highly recommended

This was an impulse buy, having not heard of Blue Touch paper, and I was not disappointed. Anyone who likes both rock and jazz (and I don't mean trad.) music will love this. I think Fusion is an overused word but Jazz/Rock fusion really sums this up. Original, exhilarating and witty performances throughout the album. A very deserving 5 stars.

SUCH IS THE POWER and creative breadth of this second release by Colin Towns' six-piece, Blue Touch Paper, this may indeed be a case of needing to draw breath! The composer and pianist/keyboardist is hugely respected in both jazz and rock worlds - and, with a career that includes a prolific contribution to TV, film and theatre, the writing here reflects that rich eclecticism.

For this exciting project, Towns employs a remarkable, fearless band to achieve the challenging diversity of his mind's eye - Mark Lockheart (saxes), Chris Montague (guitars), Edward Maclean (bass), Benny Greb (drums) and Stephan Haass (percussion and electronics). Unsurprisingly, there is a strong sense of dramatic soundtrack within these twelve originals; and the field of play is so vast that I also hear jazz/rock textures suggesting the likes of Weather Report, Brand X, Colosseum II, King Crimson, Nik Bärtsch, maybe some semblance of '70s heavy prog., and perhaps even Zappa. Yet there is a magic in the way these threads are expertly woven together to create something new, whilst also allowing freedom of expression and improvisation (something which Lockheart and Montague grasp with both hands in their typically matchless soloing).

Fuse lit, the percussively-activated `Attention Seeker' opens the album brightly (Stephan Maass a key colorist in the band), Mark Lockheart's instantly-recognisable and spirited tenor technique coupling with Chris Montague's edgy guitar. From its mysterious keyboard opening, the theme-tune-like `Isadora' gathers pace into a samba frenzy before relaxing into raunchy anarchy, Lockheart's gritty tenor encouraging `the boys' to vocalise along. The distant, floaty piano and plaintive sax of `Heaven' offer a brief interlude, and then...

An outstanding and creative fusion album. The music is evocative and atmospheric with many dynamic changes and stylistic influences (e.g. funk, rock, jazz). The songs are groovy, dense, full of ideas and beautifully arranged. Fantastic musicianship all around and a good production too. Great record.
