Product Description

Product Description

How does excavation enable the archaeologist to reconstruct the past? Victor Ambrus, who has been the Channel 4 "Time Team" artist since the programme's inception in 1994, has selected some of the key excavations from the many series, especially those of the last three years, to show how it has been possible to recreate snapshots of the past. The book forms a collection of reconstruction drawings, which convert the bare bones of archaeological excavation into living history: through the eyes of the artist, we see people from the past going about their daily lives. What comes to light reflects not just drawing but the experiences of an illustrator for whom tramping through mud and wandering around in horizontal rain are all part of the fun. Ambrus' evocative sketches cover everyday life in the country and the towns; trade and industry; religion, crime and punishment. There are also sections on prehistoric animals, royalty and the antiquaries. This is a companion volume to the author's best-selling "Recreating the Past", which won the "History Today" New Generation Book of the Year in 2002.

Brilliant book 12 Oct 2010

Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Mr Ambrus is an astonishingly talented artist who not only creates wonderful works of art in themselves; but also evokes an incredible atmosphere of the age and scene of his historic drawings.
One of my most treasured books.

Victor Ambrus is a master illustrator of history; his ability to put such feeling and atmosphere into his reconstruction drawings brings the past right into our own time.
You can hear and smell his people and his horses, you can see and feel just what those people are experiencing.
He exercises immense skill with passion but without apparent effort to enliven the remote and difficult subject of archaeological excavation in his intense and detailed re-creations of the every-day life of past times; ruined walls re-grow into huts or villas, castles or monasteries, and artifacts re-assume their roles as tools, weapons, utensils or ornaments, all in a wholly convincing manner that relates immediately to the people who made and used them.
Victor ranks with the very best of this rare breed of specialist illustrators who can put humanity back into History and make it accessible and understandable for everyone. His other book, 'Recreating the Past' is another essential collection of reconstructions of everyday historical places, people and events.
The paperback book itself is well-designed and presented on good quality paper with excellent printing, is securely bound but opens up easily; only marred by the occasional slightly fuzzy scan where Victor's drawing got rained on at the archaeological site!
Both books are highly recommended.

Draughtsmanship 16 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
Victor Ambrus's superb drawings provide a graphic background to the Time Team's explorations: costumes, buildings, and settings are very evocative. His drawings of people are even more impressive. They are all individuals, separated from us by time, but recognisable as real people. And most of this work done with a pencil! For anyone interested in Life or Figure drawing, this is a great reference work. Remarkable.
