My daughter (age 8) received Mix & Match Drawing for her birthday. She took this book camping with us last week, and I am pleased to report that it kept her constantly entertained while her dad and I were doing things like cooking and washing dishes. The book comes with a drawing pad consisting of nine different backgrounds (such as desert, city, space, etc.)--and several copies of each background--along with a pencil, a black marker for tracing the drawings, and four markers (red, yellow, green, blue). Inside the attached book are step-by step instructions for drawing all sorts of things--everything from pirates and monsters to sea creatures, and everything in between! You choose a background from the drawing pad, then choose which items you want to draw on the background. Using your pencil and following the step-by-step directions in the book, you draw in the items, then trace over them with the black pen, and finish it off by coloring your drawing in with the markers. When the drawing pad runs out, you can use regular drawing paper--the book also includes a section with the backgrounds included in the drawing pad (although the backgrounds do not contain step-by-step directions, they would be easy enough to trace or copy). The step-by-step directions are very easy to follow, the results were impressive, and my daughter was proud of her ability to learn to draw new things quickly and with ease. The only thing I would change about this book is the inclusion of the colored markers--my daughter preferred to use her Twistable colored pencils for color variety and the ability to control shading, and for those reasons I think colored pencils would have been a better choice than the markers. At any rate, this is another wonderful offering by Klutz--you just can't beat their stuff!
