The secret is seeing and drawing animals as simple shapes that fit together like a puzzle. Next, you create a convincing sense of dimension with shading. It's that easy!
Moving on to the details, Hammond shows you how to accurately draw:
Different kinds of eyes and noses
Various types of hair and fur - from squirrel's tail to a lion's mane
Animal textures - including the wrinkles of an elephant's skin, scales on a fish and the muscular build of a horse
The intricate patterns on fogs, zebras, birds and other animals
Backgrounds - including how to use contrast close up and how to make distant things look soft and far away.
Illustrated demonstrations guide your every step. And best of all, you'll see the difference in your drawings right away!

This is great! A+++,
By A Customer
This review is from: Draw Real Animals! (Discover drawing series) (Paperback)
Oh My Gosh! This book is amazing! When I had tried to draw animals in the past, I always turned up with bunches of rough, uneven lines that had a sketchy appearence. After studying this book and practicing the techniques within it, I created this beautiful drawing of a horse which I have now framed. I always get lots of great comments about it and a lot of my friends ask who I bought it from, since they can't believe that I did it! I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to improve their drawing skills, or to anyone interested in bringing out their artisticside that want a place to start.

Some good tips, but do her drawings really look REAL?,
By Lelly (ARGYLL, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Draw Real Animals! (Discover drawing series) (Paperback)
I bought this book in order to improve my drawings of animal fur. Lee Hammond does have good tips on that topic, but if you look at her drawings honestly, they are too smooth, to the point that her subjects look plastic. I think that if one takes some of her ideas, but resists the urge to blend EVERYTHING, you will actually end up with a drawing that has more life to it. I also bought her book entitled How To Draw Lifelike Portraits from Photographs. Again, whilst her tips are good, I really don't get a sense of life from her portraits, and when you compare the original photographs with her portraits, she does not always draw what she sees. This is particularly noticeable if you look carefully at the eyes of her subjects; it is almost as if she has an eye template for all people, irrespective of how their eyes actually appear in the photo. I think that for people just starting to experiment with pencil drawing, this book has great hints and pointers, but for the more experienced artist, there will be fewer benefits from reading this book.
