5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 2 Jun 2012

This book is ideal for those who wish to be able to draw realistic pencil portraits from photographs. Lee Hammond's blending technique and information on which tools to use has helped me to take my drawings far further than I have been able to in the past. This book breaks down how to draw different parts of the face - nose, mouth, eyes, ears and how to draw hair, along with other areas, bringing it all together to show you how to complete a portrait. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand 25 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book because I want to improve my drawing skills. Even in these initial stages of using it, Lee Hammond's comments on the 5 elements of shading have made an enormous difference. Significantly, Lee says in her analysis of tonal values in drawings that "The most famous phrase I use in my classes is "Get it darker!" Not going dark enough will cause your drawing to lack depth." This comment has given me the confidence to 'go darker' myself - with the effect of making some of my pictures really live, through greatly improved light and dark contrasts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book but disappointed with DVD 11 Feb 2013
By Julie R
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book because it had a DVD instruction manual with it. The DVD did not live up to my expectations because the tutorial didn't last more than 10 minutes and it was techniques I already know. She is a good teacher but I would have liked to have heard more of her!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good instructions 29 Nov 2012
By joy
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Good book with straightforward instructions in a well sequenced format. Haven't had time to thoroughly try out the techniques yet, but looking forward to getting started. Not sure about the grid idea, would take a lot of rubbing out and would have to be quite faint initially, but the idea is good when looking at drawing a likeness.
