DVD hype 24 Feb 2012
By Samisue
Format:Paperback
I chose this book above the other 'Big book of Drawing' because of the 'Bonus DVD' ... assuming that this would walk you through drawing the portrait etc - it doesn't, hence 4 stars instead of 5! It is only a video of Lee hammond going over her shading technique. As this is something I have already managed to find on the internet, I don't see how they can say it's a 'bonus.' Her technique is fantastic though and well worth trying. It is very simple once you've mastered it and gives very realistic drawings.

I bought this book as a present for my wife she is enjoying working through it. It is moving her on to the next stage of her hobby.

I bought this book because I want to improve my drawing skills. Even in these initial stages of using it, Lee Hammond's comments on the 5 elements of shading have made an enormous difference. Significantly, Lee says in her analysis of tonal values in drawings that "The most famous phrase I use in my classes is "Get it darker!" Not going dark enough will cause your drawing to lack depth." This comment has given me the confidence to 'go darker' myself - with the effect of making some of my pictures really live, through greatly improved light and dark contrasts.
