A must have for those interested in creating equine art,

This review is from: Draw Horses! (Discover Drawing) (Paperback)
Having only very recently picked up a 2B to draw again after 20 years out of school, I was amazed at the fantastic result I achieved very quickly. The instructions are clear and at the begining of the book there is a short list of equipment to purchase-eg spray fixative and a drafting brush- and when you see your finished masterpiece the tools are worth every penny.

I paint, but never had the courage to allow my drawings to be 'naked' - without paint to make them seem real. They lacked a realism that I never seemed able to capture.I bought this book in December 2005 and by following Lee's technique, my drawings now speak for themselves! This book is invaluable for anyone - beginner and enthusiastic amateur alike. I have applied what I learned in this book to other subjects and my drawing has improved beyond all recognition. It is easy to follow and written in a way that makes it accessible to everyone, with lots of examples. My 10 year old daughter is now practising with it and getting very impressive results in her drawings of her pony. I only wish Lee lived in the UK - I'd love to attend one of her workshops.

A worthwhile 'discover'y,

Circumstances referred to elsewhere (see review The Anatomy and Action of the Horse (Dover Art Instruction)) sent me in search of resources to strengthen my horse-drawing abilities.
This book, like Luard's referred to earlier, does what it says on the label although, to be fair, much of it is about drawing horses in Lee Hammond's particular monochrome style. It's a style which relies heavily on the blending capacity of (black) graphite lead and is both skillful and attractive, but it makes no reference - that I noticed - to working in any kind of coloured media. It is highly prescriptive in that way and very specific about equipment and technique, but if your desire is to produce quite beautiful drawings, in monochrome tones and essentially from photographs, this will very much help you to achieve exactly that. Still new to the book, I've already produced perhaps one of the best pieces of tonal work that I've done. The large-ish format is perfect, the drawings informative and a pleasure to look at, and the price modest. See also: The Allen Book of Painting and Drawing Horses
