TADASHI OZAWA is a professional freelance animator, and having worked for STUDIO GHIBLI and AKIRA, it is no wonder that his books demonstrate how to draw MANGA in a professional and detailed manner.
I became interested in MANGA a few years ago, through POKÉMON (SATOSHI TOJARI) and RANMA 1/2 (RUMIKO TAKAHASHI), so when I saw HOW TO DRAW ANIME AND GAME CHARACTERS I decided I would draw MANGA in my free time. Only a hobbie perhaps; but it has become so satisfying because I have always always loved to draw and assess my pictures since I was small.
I was looking for a new book to add to my collection; I wanted to be able to draw female MANGA characters stylishly but was put off by books displaying semi-naked girls with exaggerated proportions - a sexist style of MANGA.
This book is centered around designing female game characters. It explains exactly what BISHOUJO GAMING is and has various images of the eight main character roles within a BISHOUJO GAME.
BISHOUJO GAME CHARACTERS explores several techniques including poses, editing, expressions, scenes and costumes. In fact, there is a whole section on sailor suits, uniforms and fancy-dress. Other costumes shown are fanciful, including clothes you imagine would be worn in CARDCAPTORS (CLAMP). I found this book highly inspirational and incredibly detailed.
However, TADASHI OZAWA expects you to be able to draw in the style of MANGA confidently, as there are no simple guide-lines such as "make a circle for the head..." etc. On the other hand, if you can draw MANGA but are stuck for ideas, want to create a story or become a professional MANGA artist (MANGAKA) then this book is perfect for you. If you cannot draw MANGA, borrow this book from a friend instead as it is still "a good read".
One more thing - DON'T feel depressed by the level of OZAWA's work! I did before I read that he has spent many years in professional ANIME. You can get there too, but too much comparison between your work and a professional's is bad for the ego!
