Product Description

Product Description

The Draper 45317 210 mm bypass-pattern secateurs are traditional secateurs that are designed to fit comfortably into your hand and to be easy to use. The redwood handles are spring-loaded, to make single-handed operation much easier, and a locking latch keeps the handles and blades safely together when in storage.

The blades of the Draper 45317 secateurs are made from stainless steel, which makes them easier to maintain and longer lasting. The bypass design of the blades means that they can cut cleanly through plant matter with minimal crush to the plant, tree or shrub being pruned.

Secateurs are one of the most useful garden tools that you can have, as good pruning can improve the growth of plants, shrubs and bushes. The quality and design of the Draper 45317 210 mm bypass-pattern secateurs makes them a must-have item in any garden tool kit.

All of the tools in the Draper gardening tool range are designed to be tough, durable and great value for money. Ease of use and ergonomic design are key features in all Draper gardening tools, making them suitable for anybody who requires a quality tool, from the occasional gardener to the professional groundsman or landscape gardener.

For those who like their garden tools to have a `traditional' look and feel, these secateurs are the bees knees. The genuine wooden handles have a hand-hewn look, the blades and fittings are all stainless steel, and the whole construction has a solid, well-made feel - no plastic or chrome anywhere. The blades, with DRAPER etched proudly on the side of the bigger claw, are large and business-like (7cm from pivot pin to tip), and capable of slicing cleanly through small (2-2.5cm) branches, never mind pruning a rose.
Be aware, though, that you will need large hands to operate these comfortably. The handles are long, and the spring opens them wide (15cm from tip to tip). The handles also lack the `shoulder' that most modern secateurs have - you soon get used to it, but initially your hands do tend to slip down the handles towards the blades, especially when the robust spring opens them wide.
These secateurs belong in the 1950's, and are the gardening equivalent of the Sunbeam Talbot, of which it was said "many made a better car, but few made a car better". Personally, I love them - there's a real pleasure in using nicely made tools, and just holding these secateurs makes you feel like a proper gardener.

I have received my order just yesterday (it arrived very fast and was well packed, so I am most pleased with the dispatch and delivery), and since I was anxious to try the Draper secateurs as soon as possible (and the weather was kind enough as to allow it), so I did.
First of all, as other customers noticed, this item looks and feels awesome. The feeling you get while holding it is priceless. The Draper secateurs are well made, solid, have this classy appearance, are just as heavy as they should be (I am a woman, but I don't find their weight disturbing or tiring at all), and look like they will last for a very long time (provided they're used appropriately and cared for afterwards).
Secondly, they really are sharp. They arrive sharpened and oiled, and are ready to use on the spot. Which I gladly did.
My garden was ambushed for quite a while by some climbing berry bushes (courtesy to the vis-a-vis neighbour, who seems to lack the common sense to get rid of his spreading wilderness), which had grown in the past several months so stubbornly (I think "monstrously" would describe it better), that they started destroying one side of my fence irrevocably (the fence has to be replaced, unfortunately). Since I have just moved in this property about 8 months ago, tending to the garden did not seem a top priority and was postponed for this spring. And a pair of gardening gloves + these Draper secateurs were the first things I have bought for the purpose.
I now regret not having taken pictures. :) These secateurs did a marvelous job, and in approximately 2 hours of hard work "untangling the jungle", my garden looked taken care of once more (actually, I have no idea if the previous tenants took care of it, but for the argument's sake I'll assume they did).

I purchased these because I have some bushes in my garden which finally ruined the very old pair of secateurs I was using. So, I took a punt on this product and and very pleased I did. The construction is solid and the wooden handle adds a bit of class to your usual plastic looking tools.

Overall a very good product but some points to note: firstly, this is a not suited to overly delicate tasks. Pruning bushes and twigs are definitely what these secateurs were made for and it does these well. Second, it is a little on the heavy side because of its construction and it has quite a strong spring in it so your hand may ache a little with prolonged use.

In summary . . . my advice, particularly when you consider the cost, would be that you should go ahead and purchase these - I am sure you won't be disappointed.

    A very nice product.

Convinced by the reviews for this product I ordered a pair as my Felco 7s had been getting worn & in need of replacement. These were cheap & worth a punt. They look good, are well made & solid BUT the effort to use them to cut woody stems is much much greater than when using my Felcos. I wish I'd saved the money! Maybe they're fine for dandelion stems!

these would have been really good except that having straight handles after a bit of use your hand tends to creep up to the cutters making them quite awkward. They need a shape to the handles to prevent this,Otherwise they are very sharp & cut well.
