I always wanted to be in the SAS. Charlie Foxtrot Tango and all that. I do actually know the phonetic alphabet, which makes owning these radios even more fun, because most of the people I give the other radio to don't know it. So I can buzz them and say things like 'Zulu Alpha Hotel Over' and they think I'm inviting them to the Zulu for a bite to eat.
One of my favourite games to play with these is ending everything with a question. This works particularly well when the person on the other end of the radio DOES know their phonetic alphabet. They'll know that 'Out' means 'communication ended', but if you end a message with 'Out?' they think you're asking them a question, and come back to you, and then you can shout at them for not knowing that 'Out' means 'Communication Ended' and you will have won the game of phonetic alphabet tennis that only you knew you were playing...
The battery lasts quite a while, and the range is very good. Unless the person on the other end of the radio is annoying you, but the beauty of that is you can turn it off. Which is quite hilarious when they're on a cliff judging a surfing competition and radioing you to ask you to send them more hot beverages.
