"Dramatic Notes" is a layman's guide to the way composers create music to support drama, whether in the form of film, theatre, opera, radio or TV. Central to the book is a series of interviews with distinguished composers and directors as diverse as Judith Weir, Barrington Pheloung, George Fenton, John Schlesinger and Richard Rodney Bennett. How does music work with drama? What is the mysterious process by which we all recognise and respond to musical emotions and signals without necessarily 'being musical'? Who makes the decisions about the use of music in the media? And how has the twentieth century put music to work with drama as never before?

The book is written for the layman.
I wrote this book to be of assistance to non-musicians in understanding how music works with drama. It contains no musical notes, no obscure terms, instead a clear and descriptive analysis of music put to work. I feel that music has too long been considered the exclusive property of musicians and musicologists, and I hope that this book will allow everybody a voice in understanding and discussing how music is used to influence them.
