I possess a copy of the "Poetry Handbook" by John Lennard and some of it seemed rather hard going in parts and I therefore approached this book with some trepidation but it seemed fairly easy going to me. I am mainly interested in the literary side of plays and bought this book to look up some theatre/drama topics that may help me to better understand the plays that I read.

As I am mainly interested in analysing and understanding works of literature and philosophy there were some chapters in the middle of this book that didn't interest me very much (although they would be of interest to people such as theatre critics, drama students and the like) but I read about 75% of rhe book and found it very interesting and informative.

Like many students, I was dubious about a "guide to reading" but reading the introduction soon put my mind at rest. This book is written in an accessible style that is engaging and also interesting. I learnt things about plays I'd read ('Hamlet', Ibsen's 'A Doll's House') and why the Quarto was called thus. Loads more interesting drama/lit facts written in a way that makes you want to read it from cover to cover rather than the usual "flick through" style of text book.

I ordered Lennard's Poetry Handbook hours after I'd received this text.

Five stars.
