4.0 out of 5 stars Reader returns to Prior Ford 13 April 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Eve Houston takes us back to the Scottish village of Priors Ford, its residents and the wonderful scenery.

Houston has captured the same strength in village tales as Rebecca Shaw. I may even venture to say that Houston is showing more strength than Shaw. When we left Secrets in Priors Ford, Clarissa Ramsey newly widowed and having formed new relationships has embarked on her world tour and we keep in touch with this character through her letters to Alastair, in case we forget about her. It is good to know that it appears the characters are here to stay and will not be flitting in and out one book.

Clarissa's house is let out to Meredith Whitelaw, soap actress who finds her role cut short and seeks some 'resting' time only to upset the locals and make an impact into the local Drama group. Though through her interfering within amateur dramatics, Ewan McNair the son of a local farmer is brought passionately together with Alison Greenlees widowed with a young son and a helpful interest in worms.

With Meredith comes her long suffering daughter Ginny, who falls in love with everything that is not what her mother aspires for her. Ginny's involvement at Linn Hall sees the restoration of the Ralston-Kerr's ancestral pile slowly taking place. The Ralston-Kerr's are the strongest characters in this book (and the previous) the run down large village house, its history, its future, its gardens and its inhabitants make for delightful reading. There is plenty of mileage in this story and will be the main reasons I pick up book three when it is published. What I really want to know is, is Rowena really related to the Ralston-Kerr's? You will have to read the book to find out who Rowena is.

I read the first of the series and the just had to buy the rest. Her style is excellent, you feel as though you are there with the village and the whole experience is realistic. As I finished this book I just had to pick up the next and begin reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars DRAMA COMES TO PRIOR'S FORD. 15 May 2013
If like myself you haven't read the first book in Eve Houston's Prior's Ford series, Secret's In Prior's Ford, please don't be put off reading this, the second book, as it really does work perfectly well as a stand-alone novel.

A bit like becoming a newcomer to the village of Prior's Ford itself it took me a while to get to know my fellow villagers but once I did I found myself engrossed in the lives of characters such as the wonderfully out of touch (as for as teenagers go anyway) Andrew Forsyth and, my only criticism, the under-used Reverend Naomi Hennessey (think a Jamaican Vicar of Dibley type character with a son) who I hope we get to see lots more of in future books.

Warm, gentle, and yet with just enough soap opera type drama to make it feel realistic and not too sugary-sweet, this really is perfect armchair reading that because of the somewhat open ending will leave you wanting more.

4.0 out of 5 stars an enjoyable series 8 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have enjoyed all the books in this continuing saga. Very relaxing to read, no violence, no awful bad language. Authors these days seem to think that they must use the " f" word and lots of explicit sex to attract readers. Quite frankly it puts me off, I suppose I'm old fashioned, and prefer a bit of culture.
