This book presents a basic introduction to the value of artistic activity for all people. It presents a brief introduction to different kinds of artistic expression and then focuses on drama and theatre experience. In this book, we propose that drama and the creative arts are potential components of healthy personal and social development for all members of society, including people with Down syndrome. Traditionally, people with Down syndrome, like many other people with a disability, have been limited in their exposure to, and participation in drama and the other creative arts. Most of this limited exposure has come within the context of education and therapy, particularly for children with Down syndrome. This book will focus instead on the options and resources available to adults with Down syndrome, and their families and caregivers, who wish to engage in creative and artistic activities, especially in the area of drama and theatre.

About the Author
Bernie Warren PhD is a Professor of Dramatic Arts at The University of Windsor, Adjunct Professor of Community Rehabilitation Studies at The University of Calgary and Director of FOOLS FOR HEALTH clown-doctor programs (http://www.foolsforhealth.ca). Ron J. Richard Ph.D. is an actor, writer, director and educator, Ron has taught drama in education, drama with special populations and theatre history in Windsor, Ontario, and Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He has studied Drama and Theatre and has been active in several grassroots alternative theatre projects involving persons with disabilities, including the 50-50 Theatre Company of Montreal, Actsense Theatre for Young Audiences in Kitchener, Ontario, and was the artistic director of Stargaze Theatre and the Actsense East Theatre Project in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. Janine Brimbal is an educator and theatre trainer who has worked in France and the US for over 30 years. She has enjoyed training teachers, special educators, and other professionals to use the creative arts in their daily work with a wide variety of populations. She has provided creative drama workshops to many people ranging from six-month old infants to elders in rest homes.
