Product Description

When the Black Dragon seized the Deep of Ylferdun, young Gareth braved the far Winterlands to find John Aversin, Dragonsbane -- the only living man ever to slay a dragon. In return for the promise of the King to send help to the Winterlands, Aversin agreed to attempt the nearly impossible feat again.

With them, to guard them on the haunted trip south, went Jenny Waynest, a half-taught sorceress and mother of Aversin's sons.

But at the decadent Court, nothing was as expected. Rebellion threatened the land. Zyerne, a sorceress of seemingly unlimited power, held the King under an evil spell, and he refused to see them. Meantime, the dragon fed well on the knights who had challenged him.

In the end, Aversin, Jenny, and Gareth had to steal away at night to challenge Morkeleb, largest and wisest of dragons.

But that was only the beginning of the perils they must face.

This is a self contained story with 3 dimensional believable characters, twists in the plot, sufficient magic and an interesting approach to the genre. It's so easy to read you may make the mistake of failing to notice how well crafted it is and how original. I have all Barbara Hambly's stuff (except for the franchises) and they are a long way above a lot of the books currently churned out. There are now sequels to Dragonsbane - this is sad as it is really a stand alone novel and there are precious few of those around ! Enjoy.

Hambly is that wonderful rarity - a fantasy writer who is aware of the cliches and pitfalls of the genre and sidesteps them with grace and humour. Her grasp of history and the realities of life outwith 20th Century America owes more to her academic research than to the Society for Creative Anachronism and it shows; she brings an enviable sense of authenticity to this story set in a nonexistant place and time. Her characters are blessedly three dimensional and the plot is thoroughly engaging. Neither dragon slayer, dragon, sorceress, witch nor prince will be quite what you expect. This is a book I wish I had written myself;I recommend it unreservedly to fans of the genre and for readers of mainstream literature alike. Oh, how I envy you the position of opening the pages for the first time and discovering it all for the first time!

I do recomend this book, but I have a book with the same cover and published 1985 by Del Rey. The plot puts a new twist to the old dragon vs. man plot. Good characters and well thought out plot. It has been some time since I last read the book, so this short review will have to suffice.
