Product Description

Product Description

With this second collection Matthew Francis fulfilled all the promise of his first, Blizzard. His teasing out of the bizarre or esoteric leads to a world populated with dragons, devils, butterflies, and a whole ocean full of creatures from whales and cuttlefish to the denizens of deep-sea hydrothermal vents. But strangest of all are the human beings - the ecstasies and indignities of their sexual rites of passage, the routine craziness of their dream lives, the frantic and sometimes terrible adventures of recent and not-so-recent history.

About the Author

Matthew Francis is the author of three Faber collections: Blizzard and Dragons were both shortlisted for the Forward Prize; Mandeville, his most recent collection, was published in 2008. He is editor of W. S. Graham's New Collected Poems and has also published a study of Graham, Where the People Are, and a novel, WHOM. In 2004 he was named as one of the Next Generation Poets. He is Reader in Creative Writing at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and lives in West Wales with his wife, Creina.

This is a world where people go on dragon-spotting expeditions and find nests of devils in the attic. But NOT a world where readers are left scratching their heads and wondering "what's he trying to get at?" This is the proof that poetry can be both adventurous and accessible, intelligent and, when he wants to be, moving, concened with both language and people.

This is poetry at its best from the man who put the Ocean on the Internet and then into this book - a truly exhilarating read. Matthew Francis launches off with a dragon hunt, takes pastoral to the city, does the grand tour of Winchester - ('If you could fly/ this might be the place for it' - 'Off the ground': the Triforium Gallery, Winchester Cathedral) - and then of the last century ('Twentieth-Century Dream'). In between are the hilarious 'Frog Chronicles', featuring a whole new sexual vocabulary and 'The Ornamental Hermit', that won the TLS/Blackwell's Poetry Prize 2000. If only there were more books like this one ...
