You may have seen some negative reviews for
Dragonlance - Dragons Of Autumn Twilight [DVD] (the animated film that this music comes from. But any negative comments about that film, do not apply to this beautiful soundtrack.
I got this CD a long time before getting the film itself (due to Paramount holding back the Region 2 version for several months) and it is one of my favourite soundtrack CDs. Despite the small budget that the composer was given, he has created a series of themes that hold up to the same sort of level as John Williams created for
Star Wars: Special Edition Original Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK] and the six films that followed it, as well as the level that Howard Shore created for
Lord of the Rings: Complete Trilogy.
Karl Preusser has gone out of his way to create a sound that is good, but does not sound modern. Like the two iconic film series, that I mention above, this music uses classical themes, which makes you have the feeling that this music was written over a hundred years ago. He has also used some little used musical instruments, which give parts of the soundtrack a slight oddness that adds to the feel that this is the music could just possibly be from another world. But like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings music, this is done in a subtle way and the result is something that sounds very similar to classical music. There is some singing in the soundtrack, and this is done in one of the imaginary languages of Dragonlance.
I've since seen the animated film and my big regret is that the poor reception of the film means that it is unlikely that Karl Preusser will get the chance to continue this work and make music for the other two parts of Dragonlance's iconic saga. Hopefully, if this film is ever followed up by a live action version, they will rehire Karl Presusser and get him to expand on his work here.
Incidentally, if you watch the animated movie, the music on the film doesn't sound as good as it does on this CD. I think this may be down to poor editing or perhaps not asking Karl Preusser to provide alternate mixes so that certain themes can be reused several times without sounding repetitive.
If you like Dragonlance, this CD is a must buy. It really creates the perfect feel and is great to listen to while reading Dragonlance (or other Dungeons and Dragons) novels, or playing role playing games.
However, Amazon's price for this is crazy. Do not pay more than £10 for this CD.
