I LOVED this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I could not put it down and it felt as if i was watching a movie. The author has 5 stars for her description work. As with DRAGON KEEPER.

It is set in china, when there were still emperors. Ping is a slave in a palace. BUt she finds a dragon and helps him escape. She discovers who she is in these two books.

I read the first book of this series, Dragonkeeper, to my 8 year old. I was sure he could read it but he liked having me read it to him so I couldn't get him to read it to himself.

When this book arrived in the mail my son couldn't resist the tempation and even though I had started reading it to him he had to take over. He was riveted and even stayed home from school on a voluntary day to read it. He likes to read and has had other favorite books but none that gripped him so he wanted to read all day.

Carole Wilkinson tells these stories in a simple way with simple enough language for an eight year old, who isn't especially sophisticated, without ever being simplistic or patronizing. It works well since the hero of the book isn't particulary sophisticated herself.

Ms. Wilkinson weaves in a feeling of being in China and of the culture and the people which gives the story extra depth and richness and magic. It is woven into the action so there isn't too much description nor too much action. It is a well paced story with surprises and twists yet without the clichés and traps so many books, particularly fantasy type books, can fall into.

Although the book is magical and fantastical at times it is written in a way that it feels more like real life in china centuries ago. I can almost imagine it as one of the beautiful chinese movies that blend in fantastical with reality.

Share this book with your children even if you have to wait to read it once they are asleep! It is rich enough for adults yet simple enough for young readers. But start with Dragonkeeper...

This is a gripping tale that has many unexpected twists and turns in it. A children's thriller, it hinges around the heroine, Ping, a girl with astonishing talents who discovers she is destined to be a dragon keeper. At the end of the first book (The DragonKeeper) she is left to care for a baby dragon Kai. This book starts with their early days together and Kai's first encounter with the necromancer, they are captured by the boy emperor, go in search of Ping's family and then Kai and Ping are separated in the valley of the twisted snake........

I have been reading it to my two boys aged 10 and 7 and we can't wait for the next chapter.

It is compulsive reading and throughly enjoyable for adults and children.
