I became a fan of Reg Meuross after hearing him sing duo with Hank Wangford in one of the many 'No Hall Too Small' series of concerts in Cumbria at Easter. I also heard him play with some of the musicians on this CD at the Americana Festival a Newark in July. At Newark he also performed in his customary role as second to Hank Wangford in the Lost Cowboys. However, this CD is definitely not alternative Country & Western!
'Dragonfly' is the fourth collection by Reg playing his own original songs and it builds on the success of 'The Goodbye Hat', 'Short Stories' and 'Still' - all worth getting to know. When I first heard his songs they had an immediate appeal to me, much like the songs of Simon & Garfunkel did all those years ago. Reg's voice is warm and clear and he makes you want to listen again. The instrumental work on 'Dragonfly' is admirable and the recordings by Roy Dodds (who is Reg's drummer and percussionist) are great. The counter-melody role is taken by the young violinist Jackie Oates but there is a single number in which BJ Cole plays Dobro.
The songs on 'Dragonfly' are varied and melodic with a sing-along quality which makes them immediately accessible. Ten out of the fourteen songs deal with difficult contemporary subjects or historical events which satisfyingly reveal themselves on further listening. The lyrics and short intros are thoughtfully provided so I won't spoil the challenge by explaining too many of them here. They deserve your attention - especially the title song which is an upbeat number which amazingly comments on the recent bout of terrorist acts by fundamentalists! One wonderfully thoughtful song was inspired by the recent Ipswich prostitute murders. Others are about historical events such as the colonisation of America by the Pilgrim Fathers or about Dick Turpin's life. And so it goes on - one well-researched gem follows another! There is plenty food for thought here, but these strong stories lie below the musical fabric and consequently the songs can be enjoyed not only as story-telling but also as great music.
Buy 'Dragonfly' - you won't be disappointed I guarantee! Look at his MySpace site - www.myspace.com/regmeuross for a free listen to some of them.

Now, this MORE LIKE IT! Reg Meuross is a purveyor of high-quality, extremely melodic gear that deserves a much wider audience. 'Dragonfly' is a hugely accomplished, winningly melodic collection that is disarmingly honest and deceptively easy on the ear. Songs like 'And Jesus Wept', concerning the execution of a First World War soldier for desertion, and his family's fight for justice nearly a century later, is an incredibly moving affair, delivered with a heartfelt and touching vocal from Reg. Buy this album, and get a couple for your mates, too, 'cause they're going to want one as soon as you play 'em it. It lingers long in the memory. An English treasure.

I first came across Reg Meuross at this years Shrewsbury Folk Festival, where he gave a stunning live performance of his own songs to a packed marquee. This album is a fitting souvenir of that gig, as it includes many of the songs performed there. It is a pity that he is not more widely recognised, as he is undoubtably a wonderful songwriter. If you like the Paul Simon Songbook, you'll surely like this. You won't regret buying this CD - I think it's his best yet.
