Amazon.co.uk Review

"Belief gets us there", explains nun Linda Hunt to grieving widower Kevin Costner in Dragonfly. Costner plays an emergency room doctor whose ordered world is startled by "messages" from his dead wife. She's talking about the journey from life to death, but it describes the doctor's road from fact to faith equally well as he puzzles out the otherworldly events of his life. Costner's mourning comes off less lost and sad than simply emotionless and inert, but he finds good support from Kathy Bates as his sassy neighbour. Her appearances, along with a few startling horror-movie-type shocks, energise a film otherwise shrouded in loss, grief, and the hushed mood of supernatural spookiness.

It's like a fusing of Ghost, The Sixth Sense, and The Mothman Prophecies, a New Age melodrama in a sentimental key that works through a rather contrived mystic mystery to a glowing climax. This is less a ghost story than a modern twist on the old-fashioned miracle. --Sean Axmaker

This is the best supernatural film I've ever seen, an amazing heart-warming story that sends shivers down your spine throughout. Kevin Costner is excellent as the doctor who has just lost his wife in an accident, and the mystery deepens and deepens. A beautiful conclusion brings tears to your eyes, well it did to mine! Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best movies of 2002, 19 Feb 2003
This review is from: Dragonfly [DVD] (DVD)
This is a gripping tale of a man who lost his pregnant wife in a tragic accident and how she communicated with him from beyond the grave.

All actors/acresses in this movie provide moving performances to provide you with a story that's guaranteed to bring a tear to your watchfull eye.

Give the movie a few minutes to get started, and you'll be sure to forget the time you're spending watching it. The ending is amazing, but I wouldn't want to spoil it for you. A must see for anyone who enjoys movies such as 'The Mothman Prophecies' and 'The Sixth Sense'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good movie with touching unexpected ending, 15 Feb 2003

Dr.Joe Darrow(Kevin Costner)and his wife Emily both work in a hospital. Emily goes to the jungles of South-America to help sick children, but finds an unfortunate death in the jungle. Joe keeps working at the hospital, but children there, who had a near-death experience(or out of body-experience) seem to know more about Emily. It seems like Emily is trying to tell something to Joe through the children..... He keeps in contact with the children, but has to take a leave from his boss at the hospital, who thinks he's crazy.

Other strange things happen, like a DEAD man at the hospital trying to tell something to Joe, with Emily's voice..... but also at home weird things are going on.

There is a symbol that keeps coming back throughout the movie. When he discovers what it means, he goes to South-America in search of his wife. I will not tell anymore because that would spoil the movie, but the end is rather unexpected, but very touching.

If some of this sounds like The Mothman Prophecies with Richard Gere(which I think is a very weak movie) and you didn't like this movie, don't worry. This movie is totally different and the acting is excellent.
