Book Description

Aug 2002

To the nobles who live in Benden Weyr, Lessa is nothing but a ragged kitchen girl. For most of her life she has survived by serving those who betrayed her father and took over his lands. Now the time has come for Lessa to shed her disguise—and take back her stolen birthright.

But everything changes when she meets a queen dragon. The bond they share will be deep and last forever. It will protect them when, for the first time in centuries, Lessa’s world is threatened by Thread, an evil substance that falls like rain and destroys everything it touches. Dragons and their Riders once protected the planet from Thread, but there are very few of them left these days. Now brave Lessa must risk her life, and the life of her beloved dragon, to save her beautiful world. . . .

4.0 out of 5 stars The first of many 3 Dec 2008
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I read this for the first time about the time it came out. Having read it again for about the 7th time, I must say that it is as good as it always was.

It is written in 3 or more novella form, and each episode is self contained, but follows on from the one before. Anne McCaffrey set the scene and planted the characters for the whole series, but without this firm beginning, the strong characterisations would not have worked so well in the later books. F'lar and Lessa particularly are bound together in a project that will last the rest of their lives, and they are aided by the Craftmasters. The Lawyer, PR man musician Robinton, the engineer Fandarel and of course, the ex-dragonrider, weaver Lytol who takes charge of the baby lord of the great estate of Ruatha, fallen into disrepair and unproductiveness. F'lar's loyal brother is a useful sidekick, but it is the dragons that tend to star.
One can tire of the matching of dragons to riders, but in this book it is fresh and moving.

It works on many levels and is worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 1 Sep 2012

I love Pern books I had the whole set in paper back and reread them at least 6 times but when we moved they got put somewhere I couldn't find them so decided once I bought my Kindle to re-buy them all for it. I really enjoy the characters and dragons so much. I was hooked the first page of the first book and couldn't wait for each book to come out. I think they started my love of reading back when they first came out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good change 6 Feb 2004
Anne McCaffrey is most widely known as a Sci-Fi writer. But I would class this book as fanatsy and seeing as im a fantasy reader rather than a Sci Fi reader I must recommend this book as her best work. Set on the planet of Pern, whose inhabitants have been out of contact with Earth for so long the colonists have forgotten the very existance of Earth, with the threat of the Red Star and its falling Threads, which destroy all life they come into contact with, the eary colonists of Pern bred dragons to combat this threat. The book is set 400 years after the last fall of Threads when the Dragonmen, the riders of the dragons, are looking for a young beautiful girl to bond with the new dragon queen when she hatches. A wonderful tale from a wonderful author. And the best bit is, its one of many so it will keep you in books for a long while! :-)

Anne McCaffrey's Dragonflight is a rare thing - a genuinely original story rather than another genre clone. And yet this richly imagined tale includes elements of a great many well loved movies - the disinherited young woman who fulfills a destiny far beyond her imaginings, the great and enduring love that she finds along the way, the looming threat that will bring an end to everything she loves, the elite band of heroes who stand against that threat (even though they know they can't win), the impossible act of bravery that saves the day and yes, the cavalry that thunders over the hill in the final reel. They are all there, familiar themes that pull you into the story, and yet Ms McCaffrey's unique setting and particular use of them will delight you.

The girl is Lessa, forced into servitude by the Lord who ursurped her lands and title, but whose success in winning back those lands brings her to the attention of the Dragon Riders of the title. Though too few in numbers, and barely tolerated by a world that has forgotten the need for the great telepathic dragons and their riders, they are all that stands against the coming dark. They need Lessa, and it is with the riders that Lessa finds her most enduring love when she bonds with the newly hatched, and last, of the golden queen dragons. As to the threat, well that's one of the things that makes Dragonflight unique as it does not involve hordes of the undead, orcs or aliens. Similarly, the act of bravery stands out as one of the best imagined resolutions to an impossible problem in fiction. And arrival of the cavalry is just that, but with a neat McCaffrey twist that brings all of the plot lines together, as every ending should. Dragonflight is a great read.
