Book Description

In a world where magic has become wild, and evil is afoot, can the forces for good prevail?

Product Description

When Flaxfield the great wizard dies, his apprentice Sam is left without a master. As the wizards gather for his Finishing, Sam does not know whom to trust and whom he should fear. He sets off alone with only his dragon Starback for company, little realizing the perils that lie in wait. This powerful opening book of the Flaxfield Quartet is an adventure story told with great lyricism and power.

This book will entertain adults and children alike. Strong characterisation, dark story telling, nuanced plotting and beautiful writing. The story of Sam and his dragon and their battles with many foes hooks you in from the start. This is not a book that condescends the younger reader. Instead its wry humour, twisted plot and adult handling of good and evil will captivate and entertain. I thoroughly recommend this and eagerly anticipate the next.

This is a beautifully dark yet uplifting story, it hooked me in and I read it in a day. This is the perfect book for anyone, young and old, with a soft spot for dragons, magic and an adventure.

Amazing book 26 Jan 2011
A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
Dragonborn is an amazing book and is a must have. Once you start to read it, you will not be able to put it down. It is about a boy called Sam who is being taught magic but his master Flaxfield. When Flaxfield dies, Sam is made to feel that he is a failure so he runs away. He is instantly in great danger. Wiil he survive and be able to learn magic? If you want to know, read this fantastic story. I can guarantee that you will love the book. I can't wait for the other books in the quartet. Definitely a 5 star read!

I was hooked from the first page. This is writing of the first calibre, on a par with Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' series. Read more

I loved this book. As others have mentioned there are some bits that remind me of the Earthsea books but I much prefer this book especially if reading it to reluctant readers. Read more

An instant classic
I am of the steadfast opinion that children should not be 'written down' to; that children's fiction should be approached with the same high standards as adult fiction. Read more
