Product Description

Three space adventure novels in the popular Liaden Universe® series in one popularly-priced Omni edition:

Local CustomMaster Trader Er Thom yos'Galan knows that Liaden custom is to be matched with a proper bride and provide his clan, Korval, with an heir. Yet his heart is immersed in another universe, influenced by another culture, and lost to a woman not of his world. And to take a Terran wife such as scholar Anne Davis is to risk both his honor and reputation—not to mention the lives of loved ones.

Scout's ProgressAelliana Caylon is a brilliant mathematician, revered by pilots for the life-saving revisions she brought to the ven'Tura Piloting Tables. Despite this, her home life is terrifying, as the target of her elder brother's spite and her mother's indifference. Convinced that she has no recourse, Aelliana endures, until, on a dare, she plays a game of chance and wins a spaceship. Suddenly she has a way to escape her drab life—if she can qualify as a pilot, and survive her brother's abuse.

Conflict of HonorsDeclared legally dead by a High Priestess of the Goddess and abandoned by her mother, Priscilla Delacroix has roamed the galaxy for ten years, surviving and becoming a woman of extraordinary skills. Now, she's been betrayed and abandoned once again, left on a distant planet by the Liaden starship on which she had been an important officer. But she's not alone: starship captain Shan yos'Galan has his own score to settle with the same enemy and is about to offer her an alliance.

Omnibus edition of 'Local Custom', 'Scouts Progress' and 'Conflict of Honours'. Other reviewers have summarised the plot. Much more interesting to me as a prospective buyer would be the angle taken by the authors and this is its real value and originality. Make no mistake, this is about people, and (like Bujold's Vorkosigan saga) more and intelligent gripping for it.

I was new to the series with this book. I was plunged (delighted with the depth) into a richly detailed, credible, gripping, complex world of flawed-yet-sympathetic characters, cultural oddities and a wonderful network of people, relationships and values. The Science and technial-operational detail is there as a complement to that, but drips out around the people and leave alot to the imagination but is rational, consitent and interesting.

Our characters talents vary from social to genetic, piloting to linguistic, from cultural to mathematic, from cargo-handling to psychic. The bad are borderline overdrawn sociopaths, the good and the bad get their just deserts and the book is impossible to put down!

Recomended with the same enthusiasm as Moon, Bujold and Weber. On now for the next in the series (Amazon get your series linked up and organised properly PLEASE!): 'Agents Gambit' and 'Korval's Game'. Note all are big tomes (the next 2 books are each 655 and 829 Pages) and I can't wait for kindle to carry them...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic (but note that it is a compilation) 18 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A compilation of three of my all time favourite books!

Science fiction with deep and thought provoking characters whose different cultures clash in interesting ways, mixed in with interesting plots and exciting confrontations (not typically fights, more interesting than that).

I've simple lost count of the many times I have re-read these books, as the famous sci-fi author "Anne McCaffrey" said these very much become "comfort books" which are often returned to!

Quoting the production description from amazon.com (there are more reviews over there too):-

5.0 out of 5 stars I feel as if I've been given a fortune 3 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What riches, to find a whole universe, many books, that I've not visited before. This combo has three books and has led me on to others. They are so good I forget where I am when reading them. This is often on a tablet on a treadmill or exercise bike and I can get healthier painlessly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jack Vance style space opera 18 Nov 2013
By Franck
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am really enjoying the reading of this book, a powerful page turner.
The dialogue in particular are excellent, the stories are intense even if lacking of action. It brougth back to my memory Jack Vance books. The charecters are strong, with developped background and enhanced personality. Subtility, humour but also intelligence are the strengths of this book of grand SF.
