Book Description

Taiwan is invaded by Red China in the latest technothriller by T.J. McFadden. In a story that could be torn from tomorrow's headlines, Xiao Ying Tien, "The Smiling Man" hopes to use the might of modern China to crush the last remnant of the Republic of China and solidify his grip on power. Against him stand two leaders on Taiwan: President Ch'iu Wang Chen, a cynic who rediscovers his lost idealism in Taiwan's darkest hour, and General Sung Chung Tam, "The Chessmaster", a pure soldier dedicated to winning at any cost, against any odds. They lead the free people of Taiwan in a desperate fight against the corrupt "People's" Republic and it's new military power. The latest planes, ships and weapons are used alongside weapons straight out of the history books as armies and fleets clash to determine the future of China.
Among the millions caught up in this war there are:
Mike Shannon- a reporter covering his first international event, who must fight his own battle between being a detached observer and caring for a people fighting in defense of their freedom.
Group Leader Zheng Yiguan, a middle-aged idealist whose dreams of the People's Revolution of his youth run aground on the harsh realities of what China has become.
Captain Daniel "Day" O'Reilly, an ex-USAF pilot who volunteers to join a new American Volunteer Group, a reborn "Flying Tigers" flying in defense of the Republic of China.
Sgt. Soo Kuo-K'ang, a young ROC tank commander who must become a leader under the most desperate circumstances.
Premier Li Wolan, General Secretary of the Communist Party, who feels the power of his party slipping away in the new, modern People's Republic.
In the tradition of Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising" this novel tells the story of these and other people, of the strategies, combat and politics of what could be the next great war.
Reviews:
"a very good mix of characters sketches, a fast pace, and lots of bang bang. Of special merit is the way he deftly handles infowar operations"- Scott Palter, STRATEGY PAGE

"T.J. McFadden’s new novel about a PRC invasion of Taiwan is strong on military knowledge and competent on character development"-"a factual, hardboiled thriller"- Bradley Winterton, TAIPEI TIMES

1.0 out of 5 stars Just another "what if" scenario. 5 May 2014

Just another "what if" scenario - I hope that the author would research this topic better next time if there is another "next time" lots of improbable scenarios and inaccurate assumptions on the forces on both sides. Loads of glorying the Americans as the "Supreme" Military force and not understanding the culture of both Taiwanese and Mainland China. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars decent boom 25 Jun. 2014

A very well written book. Military terms are accurate and concise. However, the ending could have been draw. Out longer and made more tense.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read for most action fans 26 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this book because it looks at the conflict from almost all angles, high command on both sides, the men and woman on the battlefield and the civil population. written well you can almost close your eyes and see the battles before you. i will be looking for this writer again.

1.0 out of 5 stars PASS 28 Mar. 2014
By PAVB
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a re-branding of the author's "Formosa Straits" from 2001. This revised draft felt dated and, despite mistakes, I kept going. However, I soon gave up. The whole journalist sub-story seemed unnecessary, and the new 'Flying Tigers' with their Starfighters and Leer jets with machine guns added seemed silly, if not suicidal, especially against new Chinese hardware. Formatting errors gave me a headache. A new cover and making fun of the Tea Party does not a new book make. If you want a good Taiwan v. China read, try "China Attacks" or "Fourth Crisis: The Battle for Taiwan."

4.0 out of 5 stars Certainly worth a read 17 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A fast moving novel that is an enjoyable read. Whilst a fiction narrative - if you have any knowledge of the China-Taiwan stand off it has an air of potential reality.

Interesting concept. One needed a Jane's book of military hardware to understand who was fighting with what. But on the whole a good read.

This was a real page turner! I thoroughly enjoyed it! My only wish is that the book hand covered the Japanese and Korean involvement in a little more detail.

Why doesn't someone proof read these books? Why is this book double line spaced all the way through? If you want to loose me as a reader then you're right on track!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pacific Rim fantasy war.
Fantasy war-gaming as a novel. Not quite up to the standards of Sir John Hackett's "The Third World war" but a good read, none-the-less.
