What a marvelous surprise this book turned out to be. Initially, I was taken by the deadpan humor of the spirited and common-sensical heroine. (She's very much like Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching.) But as I read on I appreciated the novel treatment of the dragons, the colorful descriptions of Creel's apprenticeship, and the developing plot.

This isn't really a magic book. By that I mean that most magical fantasies aimed at this reading age group tend to use magic lazily as a way out of plot deadends or as a basis for a lot of alchemy hocus-pocus. In "Dragon Slippers" there is magic of a sort, but it just feels like a natural part of the overall story. And, one is certainly willing to forgive coincidences and some plot shortcuts, because they keep the book streamlined and entertaining.

An added bonus is that the heroine's friendships with various sidekicks and secondary characters have some real substance, and are not there solely to move the story along. Similarly, the wide variety of the personalities of the different dragons adds unexpected depth to the tale. There is some real emotional attachment among the characters and just a light touch of romance to round out the package and keep the overall tone of the book light. Needless to say, the quality of the writing is well above the norm for this age group, and you will encounter no cliches or overheated awkwardness. Just a delicate touch, but with a lot of spirit.

I won't precis the book as that has been done above. The book is well written and egaging from the start, and the characters are well developed and the plot interesting and well thought out. The style is very similar to that of Particia C Wrede, and if you have enjoyed this you will enjoy her Enchanted Forest Chronicles as well, and vice versa.
My only gripe is that the ending didn't really tie up all the loose ends as well as I'd like, and I'd really like a sequel to find out how the heroines relationships progressed, and some more about the dragons please - !
Definately worth adding to your shopping basket, suitable for younger readers, but engaging enough also for adults of 29!

DRAGON SLIPPERS is one of the best fantasy books I've read in ages! I always feel like good fantasy is hard to find, but this book certainly succeeded in being that and much more.

When Creel's parents die, her rather silly aunt is going to be hard-pressed to come up with the money to feed Creel and her brother, so she comes up with a plan. She's going to give Creel to the dragon rumored to live in the hills near their town and convince a local nobleman's son to rescue and marry the "fair maiden."

Anyone with sense knows this is ridiculous. The dragon is only a myth...Right?

Wrong. Creel, however, is clever enough to talk her way out of the hands of the dragon (who doesn't really want to eat her, and, by the way, collects shoes, not gold), and out of the bargain she gets a comfortable pair of blue slippers, which she wears on the long walk to the capitol, where she wants to find work putting the sewing and embroidering skills taught to her by her mother to use. It seems like a simple enough plan; however, life is never as simple as we think it is going to be.

DRAGON SLIPPERS is an un-put-downable read, set in a vividly created fantasy world. The characters are wonderful, too (although I feel the storytelling, rather than the characters, is Jessica Day George's strength in this story). DRAGON SLIPPERS is an excellent novel, one sure to appeal to fantasy fans of all ages.
