Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Voice recognition software often conjures up images of Star Trek or 2001: A Space Odyssey, where characters hold in-depth conversations and accomplish great tasks with their computers. Dragon NaturallySpeaking 5.0 takes talking to your computer out of those science fiction movies and into the world of everyday use. While recent versions of speech-to-text software have resulted in mistake-ridden documents and overpriced products, NaturallySpeaking 5.0 offers the ability to create well-written and edited documents, send e-mail and surf the web.

In addition to better accuracy, other improvements include the "training period" and vocabularies for teen, adult and advanced users. After choosing the applicable vocabulary, this training period gives the computer time to get to know your voice patterns. Instead of running through a 45-minute training session (found in the 4.0 version of this product), 5.0 thankfully only requires up to 10 minutes of preparation. The program even offers dictation pointers for those of us with poor enunciation.

One obvious advantage to voice recognition technology is that your hands are free to hold the telephone or twirl your hair while you dictate. For example, this review was actually written with the program and not with the keyboard--a feat previously impossible. The only problem was found when loud noises occurred during use (make sure to keep your kids or noisy officemates out of the room).

While NaturallySpeaking 5.0 is not perfect, it is a vast improvement over earlier versions as well as its competitors. So while you can't tell your computer to take out the trash, you can have it write your documents hands-free. Now if they would only invent the transporter. --Madeleine J. Miller

5.0 out of 5 stars Your own personal typist, 7 Nov 2000

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Naturally Speaking Preferred 5 (CD-ROM)
What better way to write a review of the product than by using the product itself. I loaded the software on my machine a little more than one hour ago, and here I am now using the software to write this review. The installation is simple and painless the documentation supplied is excellent, and the hardware e.g. the headset is also more than adequate, although I think most people would probably not require the earpiece but only the microphone, and I tend to have the earpiece away from my ear. It is quite a few years since the first voice recognition software appeared on the market, and I was one of the first to buy, being a slow typist. Generally speaking most of the first generation of VR software was rather poor, that certainly can't be said of this particular product, it's quite amazing how quickly and easily it translates your speech into text. With training I believe it can achieve speeds of up to 40 words a minute, which is about 38 words a minute more than I can type, so that will do for me.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred makes it easy to edit and format text-even change fonts, colors, and sizes-by voice! Insert phrases and paragraphs with only a few words. Listen to text and e-mail read aloud by replaying your recorded speech. You can even browse the Web-hands-free. It comes with a 250,000 word total vocabulary and has the ability to learn new words of course, ypu can also launch programs by voice and switch between applications just by saying so

So, for any aspiring authors who can't type, or Web designers who would rather dictate their text into their pages rather than type, this package is just what you want. The ability to be able to review, edit and correct your work his also very, very good. All in all I would give this product of a big Thumbs up,it really does appear that this can offer the typist a the box, and I suppose you could get the box to sit on your knee if you so wished.

I am sure that after more training, and further use, the programme will just get better and better and I have no hesitation in recommending this as an excellent buy for anyone in the market for this type of product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but you'll need a powerful machine, 20 Nov 2001
This review is from: Naturally Speaking Preferred 5 (CD-ROM)
I tried installing this on a 450mhz PC and it was completely unusable. But I've now got a 1.5ghz machine, and Naturally Speaking runs like a dream. Its voice recognition is really good, though it needs a lot of training (which is only to be expected), and its ability to capture commands for formatting, menu control, etc, is first class. Definitely recommended, but make sure you've got a powerful machine!

2.0 out of 5 stars I didn't get on with this at all., 27 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Naturally Speaking Preferred 5 (CD-ROM)
I'm sorry the program is good and yes its fun to play with. But if someone hadn't bought this for me I really wouldn't have purchased it. I've read the voice recognition training section to it four times and it still doesn't write properly.

I'm dyslexic and I realise that when I get this programme to work properly, I may finally benefit from it.
