Story
You are a Grey Warden, one of the last of an ancient order of guardians who have defended the lands throughout the centuries. Betrayed and abandoned by a trusted general in a critical battle, you must hunt down the traitor and bring him to justice.

Gameplay
Bioware have built Dragon Age Origins to have the most content of any of their games since Baldur's Gate 2, giving the player a huge world to explore in Ferelden whilst fighting the Darkspawn threat. With real time combat and command of up to three additional party members, balancing your attention between chaining together blows and using your party's skills to best advantage will be key. Being the saviour of the lands isn't the most popular job surprisingly, so conversation and diplomacy with both the reverent and the hostile is essential to progress in whatever moral and story path you decide. With crafting in traps, poisons and herbalism to refine your battle arts and boost your party in and out of battle, there'll be enough depth in items and statistics to satisfy the most hardened dungeon crawler whilst still providing a rich story-based experience for first timers to the genre.

Characters
Starting as a warrior, mage or rogue in Human, Elf or Dwarf form, Dragon Age Origins features a wealth of character customisation options both on and off the field. Each combination of race and class comes with its own "Origin Story", which combines with player dialogue choices in the game to produce a large variety of possible endings--all with voice dialogue.

With specialisations in skills earnt as your character progresses, evolve from an apprentice in your chosen field to become as focused or as versatile as you chose. Party members and support characters come with specialisation options of their own, and with an eclectic cast varying from fellow Gray Wardens to mages and spirit healers your back is definitely covered. With a dark fantasy plot married to Bioware's conversation and relationship system, choose your conversations with care as friendship, hatred, violence or love could be the end result.

Key Features:

  • A Stunning World to Explore - BioWare's deepest universe to date with over 80 hours of gameplay and more than double the size and scope of Mass Effect.
  • An Epic Story - Completely shaped and reactive to your play style, multiple endings await based on your actions. Choose wisely..
  • Complex Morality - Murder, genocide, betrayal, the possession of children—in this world, there are no easy choices.
  • Tailor your Dragon Age - Origins experience from the very beginning by choose from six different Origin Stories.
  • Full Character Customisation - Sculpt your hero’s image, personality and morality based on the choices you make throughout the game.
  • Bone-Crushing, Visceral Combat - Battle against massive and terrifying creatures with legendary powers and choose from over 100 different magical spells and skills, including beheading your foes or casting spells that make enemies explode from within.

4.0 out of 5 stars Passionately Recommended, 11 Jan 2010
By Mr. G. Patmore (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
Being a fan of medieval fantasies similar to Oblivion, loyal to the makers of Knights of the Old Republic, and a massive fan of RPGs: this game was for me. Dragon Age while not delivering what feels like the whole package, is a real time-sucker. There are many times where I've told myself: "Okay, another half an hour an then I'll come off", and then find that I've played an hour, which eventually turns into an hour and a half and so on and so forth.

The games I listed at the start of this review are clear inspirations for this game. True, Bioware created KOTOR and is famous for its RPGs, so that's not much of a surprise. What is a surprise however, is that saying that they STILL manage to surprise me! The characters are as lovingly put together and as real as you would expect or hope for. I especially love the character Morrigan (voiced by Claudia Black) for her dry wit and dark humour; and she in turn is reflected by Alistair, a relatively new Grey Warden who is dependable in battle and funny for his ability to assess each situation with his light, and equally dry humour. I guarantee you'll keep him your party through most playthroughs.

The plot itself is the before-seen fantasy tale. Heroes against impossible odds and a horde of enemies who seem to kill everyone easily except you. But saying that it's still a loved theme, and the magical thing is that they made another interesting tale out of it fit for a fantasy author's series.

The gameplay is for me, fun and interesting. But people aren't making mountains out of molehills when they say that the radial menu is a nuisance, when you're a warrior or rouge it doesn't pose much of a problem but as a mage with an ever-increasing spell list it can get a tad fiddly; something the pc version has the upper-hand in. Otherwise it is rather satisfying to cut at your enemies or bash them with a shield, or as a mage cast a lightening storm or freeze your enemies and shatter them with a stone punch.

The only thing I have against this game is mediocre side-quests. With games like Oblivion and Fallout 3 the massive amount of time the game took was spent on about 30 or more side-quests, each one taking you on average an hour or so to complete. It's not the same with Dragon Age, side-quests aren't as clearly listed and while some can be an hour they are usually simple and there is a lack of focus on them.

If you were expecting a sandbox game then be warned, this game is almost strictly story-based. And it's lack of sandbox is largely disappointing as I think it could have made this game an easy five stars. That being said I fully recommend this game and if mine wasn't missing I'd be playing it now.

Gameplay: 4/5
Story: 4/5
Characterisation: 5/5
Dragon Age Universe: 5/5
Worth it: 5 out of "Hell yes."

5.0 out of 5 stars The best RPG for the 360!, 10 Nov 2009

Yes! It's what all us RPG fans have been looking for...a 'true blue' RPG for consoles. All of you that loved the RPG greats, baldur's gate, neverwinter nights, oblivion, mass effect will love this!

I certainly do...it is an amazing immersive game with fantastic dialogue and voice acting (which i particularly love) You really find yourself getting attached to characters in a way that tugs at my heartstrings and makes them seem like real beings like no other game previously (I have a major crush on Alistair, actually ^^). Play this game at the peril of your social life - it will suck you into its expansive world whether you like it or not. The 6 'origins' idea are fantastic and the way WHO you are in the game makes a significant difference to how NPCs feel/act towards you is wonderful...And each NPC with dialogue options has such a well developed character and backstory they have enough depth to be the main character! Choosing who you are in the game is so free and open ended, you can be as good or bad as you like or anywhere inbetween and I feel this 'free choice' has been executed better than in any game, EVER! (Sorry fable I, II, Oblivion - you've been thrashed) I find the graphics actually quite satisfactory and some of the cutscenes are breathtaking...the kinds of stuff that makes your hair stand up and beautiful sweeping soundtrack.

The actual gameplay (quests, battles, interaction, items etc.) is just ... addictive and so much fun! You get drawn into the story and its so much fun to play that you'll find yourself picking up your controller whenever you can. You get ALOT of bang for your buck with this game with insane amounts of gameplay available and SO much replay with the 3 different classes and races offering a new game experience each time. There's so much I could go on to rant about but I just want to get across: This. Is. An. Amazing. Game.

Just, buy it...seriously. If you like RPGs you HAVE to have it...have to!

...HAVE TO!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid RPG, 6 Nov 2009

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

I'm about 10 hours into this game. At first, I was disappointed. I began as a human noble, and at first the graphics and voice acting seemed very poor. I kept going, however, and the game gets much better. The story and characters are very interesting, and there seem to be romance options to pursue. Even the graphics seem to improve as the game goes on. I'm enjoying Dragon Age far more than I enjoyed Oblivion, but compared to other Bioware games it feels as though it's lacking something. It will, however, more than tide me over until Mass Effect 2 comes out.
