So, yeah. I liked this novel. It had good characters, an interesting premise and did the job of filling the gap between games. To be honest, however, it was lacking. I struggled to give it four stars... but then, hey, it wasn't three - ideally it would be three and a half but you can't give that can you? Hence the case of rounding up.

**There could be minor spoilers here**

Why only three and a half you say? Well my main gripe is the sheer amount of time that it took for anything to actually happen. The first few chapters can be forgiven for setting the scene - every text needs to establish context. However, without giving anything away, it wasn't until the middle of the book when things really started to pick up momentum. Now I know things need a beginning, middle and end etcetera but getting to the point where the story, in my opinion at least, truly 'begins' shouldn't take about nine chapters or over 160 pages.

Another thing is that I didn't like what it did with one of my favourite characters from Dragon Age: Origins. Its handling of Wynne as a character was... strange, due to how much she had changed from who she was in the game. The relationship she had with Rhys was, for me, not explored anywhere near enough either.

Also, on the topic of characters, they weren't really explored enough for my liking. For example, you get hit by a revelation about one of them at the very end of the book and nothing more is really made of it and there is no time to explore the discovery. The female Templar, Evangeline, is also underused. Sure, you find out a little about her and it is enough for the purpose of the story but I still felt as though she was a bit of a none-character.

Three words: Asunder is stunning. I only just finished yesterday, and have been thinking about it on and off since. That is quite simply how good it is. WARNING, my next part of the review might contain some mild spoilers!

STORY:

Without giving away too many details, the story toys with the idea of being able to reverse the Rite of Tranquility, which as players of the game know leaves mages completely emotionless and unable to cast spells - hence they cannot be possessed by demons. If this could be reversed then the Chantry and the templars will be compromised as they have no way of controlling potentially dangerous mages. This whole concept, inevitably, is what becomes the spark for the Mage-Templar War we are obviously going to see in Dragon Age 3. Asunder is perfect for anyone who wants to bridge the gap between DA2 and 3, offering the chance for the fan to get a better insight into the world of Thedas and in particular, its mages and templars! David Gaider's prose, for one thing, crafts this story into something that is so good it's ensnaring, whilst remaining simple enough that anybody can read it. Characters are written so their voice can be heard clearly through the writing, and you do honestly care what happens to them. Let's just say that the ending was sad enough that I felt the threat of tears, and the Epilogue was so satisfying that I left the book feeling very pleased indeed. Some of the settings throughout are so exquisitely described that it is like you are there. (I know that's a cliché but it is the honest to Maker truth!

The best dragon age book so far. It takes place after the second game and is actually relevant to the
third game (even introducing one of the companions... Cole). It also includes three of the Warden's companionship which makes it even more significant in DA universe plus possibly the biggest event since Andraste marched on Tevinter! Highly recommend this to any Dragon Age fan!

If you're a fan of the games or the previous two titles this new book is an absolute corker as it starts shortly after the end of the first game. It's well written, the prose top notch and David Gaider really does give the reader what they want in this imaginative as well as dangerous world.

Add to this great pace, a wonderful control of the lulls as well as peaks of combat which when blended with an authorly voice that gives the reader exactly what they want which will more than entertain, although to be honest you have to expect perhaps a change or two to the outline from the game as some of your choices you made will have given you differing results. Still, that said, a satisfactory read and one that I really enjoyed, so much so that a complete replay will be in action shortly.

An easy and enjoyable read which sets up a lot for the upcoming Dragon Age: Inquisition. Features a handful of Origins characters and is written by one of the main writers of the games, so is easy to recommend for fans of the series. A distracting amount of errors in the kindle version holds it back somewhat.

I personally found this impossible to put down. David Gaider again delivers an intense and in depth story line that I expect since necessitated nights. Rhys is a delightful and deep character whose mother is a bit of a shocker! The landscapes and struggles of Thedas are brought forth in amazing detail. You feel the wind and smell the dark spawn. The arch demon plagues and inferno rages and you feel the heat. The epilogue makes you stand up and shout while leaving you ready for the inquisition!
