4.0 out of 5 stars Good Old Leslie does it again, 21 Jul 2005
In the terms of comic film genius, you either love him or hate him. I personally think he is great. If you need a good pick me up after a bad day at the office or generally need cheering up, then look no further. Those especting some sort of strong plot or high drama should stay away. Those looking for a good laugh, loads of stupid jokes and general mayhem need to buy this DVD as quickly as possible. This is Leslie at his most stupidest, which is what he does best. Mel Brooks also lends a hand in this comedy madness as the would be vampire slayer.
Classic comedy stuff!

4.0 out of 5 stars A very amusing Dracula spoof - played in the Carry-On style, 6 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Review of Dracula - Dead and loving it.

Surprisingly, despite sticking fairly closely to the theme of Bram Stoker's original Dracula plot, Mel Brookes and his team manage to turn this version of the story into an enjoyable comedy. Its tongue-in -cheek style is reminiscent of the Carry-On films, with the jokes coming thick and fast.

Leslie Nielsen successfully plays the bungling Count who has the misfortune to choose the mentally challenged Renfield as his slave, thus causing himself many problems. Mel Brookes plays the vampire-hunting Professor Van Helsing with joyful gusto and one of his most amusing scenes centres on a post mortem in which he tries to shock all his students into fainting. Jonathan Harker is amusingly portrayed as a straight-laced wimp. There are several running jokes, one of which centres on Dracula's shadow, which has a life of its own.

Perhaps the best thing I can say about the film is that I have been forced to watch it at least a dozen times because my four grandchildren (aged 8-12 yrs) loved it so much! They thought that the Count was a very likeable villain who amused rather than frightened them and they were much taken by both the lunatic Renfield and the scatty Professor. Scenes which in true horror films would upset children are handled in such a way (basically by going way over the top to get laughs) that they become very amusing. Examples of this are the post-mortem scene (you don't see the body) and the staking scene (Jonathan Harker gets absolutely drenched in unbelievably vast fountains of blood, the joke being that the vampire had just had a meal).

3.0 out of 5 stars A good attempt at spoofing the prince of darkness, 11 May 2007
By D. Climo - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Well, well, well. I remember when I first saw this on tv at the age of ten or eleven ten years ago approx. I didn't really think it was all that funny and that the comedy was a bit stilted.

However I watched this about two years ago and realised that it was really an attempt by Mr Mel Brooks at putting the famous Dracula character and story into a 'Carry On' style theme. With that it isn't that bad and is watchable.

Leslie Neilsen (from 'The Naked Gun' series) makes a pretty good clumsy Dracula and Amy Yasbeck along with Lysette Anthony make sizzling damsels in distress as Mina Harker and Lucy Westonra. One of my favourite scenes is where Jonathan is nearly seduced by Lucy in the graveyard. Hilarious. Also funny is the theatre scene between Dracula and the Stewardess.

If you like Mel Brooks and Leslie Neilsen films then I would say get these because you could do worse and get the Scary Movie films. ***

2.0 out of 5 stars Dead, but not loving it all that much.
This film leaves a lot to be desired. As a major fan of both vampire films, and Leslie Nielson comedies, I expected a major treat with Dracula, dead and loving it. Read more
