Stylish, snappy and entirely without a coherent idea in its head, Dracula 2001 is "Presented by Wes Craven" but shows comparatively little sign of his controlling intelligence. This is very much "Dracula--the Rock Video" with some memorable dream sequences and a lot of product placement: the heroine may not be a virgin but she works at Virgin Records. Among its incidental pleasures are a high-tech bank raid which secures the thieves nothing but an ominous silver coffin, Christopher Plummer as an immortal Van Helsing surviving by injections of leeches that feed on the imprisoned Dracula, Johnny Lee Miller as an unusually obtuse servant of good and Star Trek: Voyager's Jeri Ryan as a television news reporter turned Bride of Evil. The early scenes make interesting use of London's Eurostar terminal as a sinister backdrop. The climax moves to New Orleans during Mardi Gras giving the film a frenetic edginess and a lot of partially clad people to look at; it also proves to tie into a moderately inventive reconsideration of Dracula's origins.--Roz Kaveney

Product Description

Horror-meister Wes Craven brings Transylvania's most famous son up to date in this 21st century gothic romp. When a group of hi-tech thieves break into a security vault, they fail to find the priceless artefacts they are looking for, and instead discover a crypt which has been unopened for 100 years. They then open the crypt and unleash the terror of Dracula, allowing the old bloodsucker to fly off to New Orleans on a mission to seek out the young girl who shares his dark legacy. Never mind though, handsome vampire hunter Simon Sheppard (Jonny Lee Miller) is hot on the trail, and he's determined to save the girl from Dracula's undead clutches.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dracula 2001 5 Aug 2010
By Trish

Firstly, I'm a huge fan of the Vampire Genre and so looking for my personal birthday treat decided to search the web to find different versions of the story to add to my growing collection.

I remember catching this particular movie a couple of years ago and the biblical theme somehow stayed with me. Judas Iscariot doomed to walk the earth for eternity as his penance for the betrayal of Christ albeit pre-destined.

Never having read the original book of Bram Stoker's Dracula, although I have seen the Gary Oldman portrayal, I can only presume that Stoker meant for Draculia as he is referred to, to be redeemed through love.

Puzzling over the whys and wherefores of despatching the ultimate vampire through the regular means have no effect, and so the connection between the crucifixion, the 30 pieces of silver together with the suicide of Judas Iscariot work extremely well. (For me at least).

In this movie, Dracula/Judas is redeemed in the only way that he can be destroyed, but for those of you who haven't yet seen this film, I won't give it away.

Overall the film is pacy with suspenseful moments. Absolutely loved the Jeri Ryan (7 of 9 - Star Trek Voyager)character.

Christopher Plummer portrayed Van Helsing with depth, feeling and passion, plus he had great things to say about Gerard Butler in the extras section of the DVD.

Jonny Lee Millers portrayal of the good guy was excellent. Justine Waddell was believable as the troubled daughter of Van Helsing, portraying enough angst with regards to the dreams/visions/feelings the character was experiencing.

Lastly, Mr Butler as a vampire... well I can definitely say that he's in my top five.

I absolutely love this film and rate it in my top ten of guilty pleasures. All I can say is, if Vampires are your bag... then enjoy

4.0 out of 5 stars You'll be surprised how good this adaptation is. 13 April 2002
Format:VHS Tape
A modern remake of a well done theme. Ok we all know the dracula formula. But this film aims at something different. A little more fast paced and aimed at a younger audience, this is a really good film if you aren't a film snob. All the performances are a really good and i can see at least a half dozen potential big names for the future here.
The different style ending with give you a littl e brain exercise into the legend of dracula.
I advise you to buy it.
Its ace

4.0 out of 5 stars CAMP YET STYLISH... ?? 16 July 2002
Format:VHS Tape
INTERESTING. Some of the dialogue is a bit tacky but if you enjoy a good horror romp, then this is for you. I know classic Drac fanatics will turn in their graves(!) but I thought it was totally FAB. Actually left me with something of a fondness for the blood-thirsty anti-hero. A twist on the original story at the end was rather bizarre - but did leave me pondering for a while afterwards, so guess it worked, then. Wasn't too sure about casting of Jonny Lee Miller (perhaps a reflection of Keanu's performance in the otherwise brilliant Bram Stoker version??) - and would've loved to have seen Sam Raimi at the helm!! Just an afterthought, though: how come Gerard Butler isn't a huge star?

What a great twist to the age old story of the blood sucking vamp! It amazes me that no-one has thought up the twist before, (including me), as it's quite believable...well it would be if there WERE such things as vampires! But oh how I long for there to be a Dracula so sexy and charasmatic as this one played to perfection by my beloved Gerry!

You may think that I'm just bigging up this film because I adore/worship/lust after Gerard Butler, (check out my name!), but you would be wrong. I admit that's what made me buy it in the first, place but how great to find an actually bloody good film to boot!

The idea of Dracula actually being Judas Ischariot, (hence the hate of all things Christian, the cross, the bible and silver which represents his payment for betraying Jesus,) is mind bogglingly brilliant. It's perfectly suited to this dark, gothic character. The speech he gives on the rooftop at the end while looking up at a neon crucifix, complete with Jesus, is so well played and heartfelt that it's hard to despise this monster. Especially in recent months, (post DaVinci Code madness), when there has apparently been uncovered some bible pages that give clues to say that Judas was asked by Jesus Himself to betray Him. But I suppose we have to make up our own minds about that just as we do with DaVinci Code.

Aside from the story, there are some other great performances, Christopher Plummer and Justine Waddell in particular stand out for me. He is completely believable as the 100 year old Van Helsing who has kept himself alive by injecting himself with regular, small amounts of Dracula's blood, (extracted with the use of leeches), simply to protect the world from said beastie until he can find a way to kill him.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dracula, the millennium edition 7 Jan 2003
By Tom
Two things are essential to get anything out of this film: beer and company. Its that kind of flick. But given those circumstances its great fun. Stylish and sexy enough to make up for the whole intrinsic silliness of the thing. Dracula himself broods admirably and the secret of his true identity, whilst hardly profound, is a nice idea and diverting enough.
Given that this isn't a particularly serious film I didn't find the product placement too annoying, even funny, but it couldn't have been more obvious if they'd had van Helsing simply confessing his love for Richard Branson and thanking him for everything.

I absolutely love this film. It's exciting, sexy, dangerous, mesmerising, and ultimately sad. The story is refreshing too, being set in the now rather than the past.
