5.0 out of 5 stars All time Disney Classic Smuggler Adventure 20 Dec 2008
Format:DVD
Had never heard of this until last month-am I glad I bought it- Dr Syn:The Scarecrow of Rodney Marsh was a 3 part Disney adventure story on the 'Walt Disney Wonderful World of Color' tv show from 1964. It was filmed in Britain as a feature film (and actually released in the UK as a cinema film with much of the tv show cut out).It stars Patrick(Prisoner)McGoohan as Dr Syn-an 18th Century vicar who by night is the masked Scarecrow who defends his oppressed villagers from the nasty tax collectors of the King (a kind of 18th Century superhero). This has been given the full Disney treatment with a perfect print-5.1 sound. The story is a first class adventure-both kids and adults will love it and I cannot recommend it enough. The only problem-it was released as a limited edition so prices are high!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb action-adventure 23 April 2012
Format:DVD
Although expensive this is a great purchase....

Unfortunately in the UK we never even got the opportunity to buy this much requested 2 disc special edition dvd in its more reasonably priced version as that was only available in the US. It was released there as a limited edition in a special commemorative tin container (VERY RARE INDEED TO OBTAIN) where it very swiftly sold out. It IS ONLY AVAILABLE in region 1 coding - but thanks to my multi-region dvd player, I was able to experience, what for the Disney studio must have been a real labour of love. (BTW no need for expense, it is very simple to convert your existing dvd player to multi-region by a simple code - look elsewhere on Amazon etc or even just watch it on your lap-top.)

The film has been beautifully restored, looks amazing and sounds wonderful it's mainly shot on location in authentic villages and churches to replicate Dymchurch and the smugglers' coves. Being set in the wonderfully isolated and slightly spooky Romney Marsh gives the film an "edgey" quality not usually associated with Disney. The story although obviously aimed at young viewers, works equally well for more adult viewers. Only Patrick McGoohan (wonderful in the dual role of Scarecrow and Dr Syn)could get away with hanging someone in a Disney movie:0) The cast is packed with plenty of long gone great British stalwarts, such as Michael Hordern, Patrick Wymark, Tony Britton, Geoffrey Keane etc. Co-strarring with PMG is(the thankfully still with us) George Cole, who himself plays a dual role, that of Sexton and the fearsomely masked henchman and confidente of the Scarecrow with much sly humour.

As well as the European theatrical release you get the 3 part American TV version, containing an excellent separate story not covered in the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Soldiers of the King Feared His Name." 28 Dec 2008
By Mark Baker TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
During the 1960's, Disney produced a series of three episodes of his TV show about a mythical character in England during the late 1700's. The Dr. Syn episodes were also edited down and turned into a feature length movie. They have been extremely popular but hard to find over the years. This fall, Disney finally released them as a limited edition two disc set.

Disc one features the TV episodes that tell the tale of Dr. Syn (Patrick McGoohan). He is the respected priest of the Romney Marsh area of Southern England during the rule of King George III (you know, the king during the American Revolution). But at night, he is The Scarecrow, the leaders of a gang of smugglers who attempt to skirt the king's high tariffs and split the money so they can pay their local taxes.

Of course, the king doesn't take it lying down. He sends General Pugh (Geoffrey Keen) to try to bring The Scarecrow to justice. He tries to use navy conscription and a traitor to do it. But when a deserter shows up, will that finally be Dr. Syn's undoing?

The second disc features the theatrical version of the story. Basically, it takes a little bit from the first episode and combines it with all of the second and third episode. There is really nothing on the second disc you didn't see on the first, so for the first time I almost feel like the second disc wasn't needed.

But that's not to say what's here isn't fun. I can understand why the Robin Hood like tale is so popular, it's loads of fun. Watching Dr. Syn plot his way out of each predicament is amazing.

These discs were worth waiting for. The film is presented in its original wide screen and has been restored to an almost flawless appearance.

5.0 out of 5 stars BACK TO THE SIXTIES 8 Jan 2010
Format:DVD
Hard to believe that 47 years ago I was a resident when Disney came to film this masterpiece in and around the coastal areas of Romney Marsh. How I relished the activity of the time. I am sure the whole Cast and Crew would have been amazed at the isolated areas in which they were filming. Unable to use the Dymchurch Town Church, the choice was made to use all interior and exterior shots at the lovely St.Clements Church at Old Romney, situated just a few miles away.

I watched the feature film when it was released and had managed a couple of viewing on U.K.Television over the years, again very enthusiastic about seeing any local people who were given small roles in the movie. Until now never realizing that it was being filmed as a 3 part Wonderful World of Colour for American Television.

Now that I am a proad owner of Disney 2 Disc Treasures. I can relive the experience with this clearly remastered copy of a Classic Family Movie.I highly recommend this very expensive title. You will not regret the purchase.
