From Amazon.co.uk

An animated rendition of Dr. Seuss's classic book about the threat of industrialization to nature, The Lorax opens in Thneedville--a town never depicted in the original book. Thneedville is an artificial place, made primarily from plastic. It sports inflatable trees, fast cars, and air quality so poor that the residents are forced to purchase bottled fresh air. In another new twist to the story, 12-year-old Ted (Zac Efron) discovers that his crush Audrey (Taylor Swift) wants nothing more than to see a long-extinct Truffula Tree, so he sets out to impress her by finding one. Since there are no real trees in Thneedville, Ted acts on the crazy stories of his grandmother (Betty White), venturing beyond the city's walls into the desolate wasteland to locate a mysterious creature called the Once-ler (Ed Helms). Here the story and animation begin to more closely follow the book. Ted discovers the grumpy recluse, who reluctantly begins to tell him a tale about a once-perfect landscape filled with beautiful Truffula Trees and cute frolicking animals--a landscape now decimated by one greedy young man's insatiable appetite for profit. The beauty and wonder of the Truffula forest and its creatures are right out of Dr. Seuss's illustrations. While the forest creatures may not be directly referred to as Brown Bar-ba-loots, Swomee-Swans, and Humming-Fish, the cute little bears, funny-looking ducks, and especially charming trio of singing fish are instantly recognizable. They serve, as they do in Dr. Seuss's book, to add just the right amount of humor and levity to what would otherwise be a pretty heavy-handed message from the Lorax (Danny DeVito) about environmental preservation. Ted's hormonal instincts to impress Audrey slowly begin to take a back seat to the plight of the lost trees and animals, and the Once-ler's assertion that "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better" rings true by the end of the film. The abundance of original music is a nice and unexpected addition to the story, though why neither Efron nor Swift actually gets to sing is perplexing. (Ages 5 and older) Tami Horiuchi

Product Description

The 3D-CGI feature Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax is an adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ classic tale of a forest creature who shares the enduring power of hope. The animated adventure follows the journey of a boy as he searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.

Danny DeVito lends his vocal talents to the iconic title character of the Lorax, while Ed Helms voices the enigmatic Once-ler. Also bringing their talents to the film are global superstars Zac Efron as Ted, the idealistic young boy who searches for the Lorax, and Taylor Swift as Ashley, the girl of Ted’s dreams. Rob Riggle plays financial king O’Hare, and beloved actress Betty White portrays Ted’s wise Grammy Norma.

Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax is the third feature created by Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me, Hop).

5.0 out of 5 stars A touching moral - and better than I thought! 1 Aug 2012
Format:DVD
So we went to the cinema, with nothing on that we wanted to watch. Dr Seuss' The Lorax looked like an alright film, although the trailers and the title didn't appeal to us. Nevertheless, we went to watch it anyway.

At first, I thought it was going to have an extremely poor storyline that would drag on just to use up the 90-minute norm length for films these days. However, it was quite interesting. A boy, trying to impress a girl who wants to have a real tree (sorry, I forgot to explain that they are living in a highly polluted town where they have machines that produce clean air and where all the trees are either inflatable or mechanical). To get a real tree, the boy needs to go and find the only man who knows what happened to them (yes, I know, doesn't sound the best).

As the story develops, we learn more about just what happened to everything. It all builds up and the pieces of the puzzle slot together until you know the truth. It is entirely true that this story could be told in under 10 or 15 minutes, but the full 90 minutes include the tiny details. The town is very much alive and living, with song and dance throughout, but the people living there do not understand the importance of trees (as they follow the manufacturer of bottled air who is totally against the things that 'stick out of the ground, with no purpose and leave messy leaves all over the place').

The film also contains an aspect of humour - not too cheesy, just enough to keep you interested in the film whilst thinking about the true seriousness of it. Entertaining and well-thought, this film is great for the whole family, so see it now! Forget about the title that puts you off and the poor trailers. 9/10 and a big moral. Remember - UNLESS.

5.0 out of 5 stars GOOD FILM WITH A GOOD MESSAGE 7 Aug 2012
By BAZ316
Format:Blu-ray
Better than it looks this one. It may not go down as a classic, but with a good message about things we really should care more about, this film does it's job well.
It's basicly about a boy trying to find a tree for a place that has none, the reasons given as the story goes on. It's well thought out with good voice overs and some really good songs, including a very catchy one near the end. I'm a grown man and i really got into the characters and liked what they were teaching, all this done with nice images and beautiful colours, good job.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love the ginger fluff ball 17 Sep 2012
By Jackiesmackie TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
I went to this with my partner, we didn't take any children. It was magical! Danny Devito was great as the little ginger ballof fluff known as the Lorax. Zac Effron was unrecognisable in this movie As Ted, the lead character. A young boy wants to impress the girl of his dreams, (Taylor Swift), and he asks her what is the one she has always wanted, `to see a real tree'. Easier said than done, trees are extinct, replaced by electric versions. People in Thneedville pay for their air, supplied by a money grubbing little minion called O'Hare and when he gets wind of the boys mission he sets out to stop him. On the advice of his grammy, wonderfully voiced by the legend that is Betty White, he sets out to see the Once-ler, he may be the only person who can help. The Once-ler tells a tale of greed and obsession that saw the demise of the once beautiful landscape. He used all the trees to make `Thneeds'. A non-sensical item which had many purposes, one of which was just to lie in an untidy heap on the floor. Ted must listen and take heed to what he is being told. The Once-ler can't trust the last known tree seed to just anyone. The Lorax visited the Once-ler in a bid to make him change his ways before it was too late and alas, all the trees fell. The Lorax went back up into the sky, bum first hahhahha.. Well this being a kiddies film you know it is going to have a fab happy end. He wins the Once-lers trust, evades capture by the evil O'Hare and plants his seed in the middle of the artificial town where all can see. A beautiful film with a very socially conscious message. As an adult I enjoyed it!

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!! 7 Jun 2013
By Paya
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this expecting it to be awful, the 1972 version was my favorite film as a child and I started watching this with low expectations but I have to say I was blown away, it's funny, has great songs, classic characters and a brilliant message, Ed Helms is a great 'once-ler' and it answered a few questions that the original didn't answer, I would definitely recommend this film to anyone, not just for families.
