Been a fan of Doc M's for many years since my school days. OK, so you always knew you'd go through hell with new ones to start with but that they would always soften and mould to your feet with patience and time and become very comfortable.

I had a pair of this style some years ago and wore them out, I wanted another pair but Doc Martens seemed to stop making this style.

Having read some of the reviews from people saying how uncomfortable they found them until broken in I looked for hints/tips on how to break them in without them breaking my ankles and feet.

The hints and tips I found I have followed and I can honestly say that aside form being quite stiff at the moment they have not rubbed at all and I am finding them comfortable.

To start with I spent a little time gently rubbing the backs of the shoes to soften the leather and carefully folding the backs over into the shoe.

I then wore them indoors for about an hour to get them warm and then applied polish to soften the leather outside. Since then I've worn then in the office for 2 days straight and they are already breaking and softening up.

I also wore thicker than normal socks to pack them out a bit more and stretch the leather.

I have high hopes for these shoes and so far they have not disappointed. I will spend the weekend wearing them about the house and am confident that come Monday I can wear them to work, at work and home again.

Lastly, if you like a nice mirror like shine these are the shoes for you with Kiwi Parade Gloss polish they shine up brilliantly and look really smart.

A great quality pair of brogues. Just wore them today and walked three miles - certainly breaking them in is less painful than my previous Clarkes. A smart, comfortable pair of work shoes - which are too nice for work! Might get some brown suede ones for jeans too!

Update: After 6 months they still badly rub on top of the foot - it is the stitching join at the base of the laces - it is effectively a sharp edge. Not good.

I have always hankered after a pair of DM's and this really hit the spot with the brogue detail as perfect for wearing with a suit too.
Second day I wore them I walked about four miles in London- big mistake, ended up with two huge rubs on one foot, but hopeful once they have worn in properly that will be the last of those. My own fault really, should have known better.
They look stylish and fun all in one!

They fit like gloves , which seems odd coz the gloves were a bit tight and needed stretching a bit

I love Dr Martens for work and have owned several pairs over the years, the only issue is always the toughness of the leather which causes blisters for the first few weeks until they soften. I've done the usual and applied dubbing to the back and sides but still I have a couple of new blisters on my ankles. Wish there was a quicker way of softening the sides or Dr Marten would soften the leather slightly? Once worn in they are fantastic work shoes that last for ages and they become extremely comfortable.

Not had the 3989 brogues before. Much tighter fit than the size 9 4161s which I can wear straight away. These need a breaking in period as the leather is stiff and they feel tight initially. I wear them around the house for a day or two until they start to soften up. Delighted with the quality and appearance. Made in Thailand.

Very sensible - do take time to break in, but once done properly, you'll love them. Leather is harder than the normal shoe as its a brogue, thus the breaking in time.
