These casual slip on boots are made from Dr Martens signature leather, adorned by some functional stitching patterns. Elsewhere a trendy heel tag is evident at the top of the boot and a thick sole provides extra durability to complete the look. Elegant but tough, this boot suits the office and the building site.
It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two founders decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On 1 April. 1960, the first cherry-red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460 (1/4/60). To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

When I first received these, I would have given them 5 stars. They looked great and were a comfortable fit. But having worn them consistently to work (in an office) for about 7 months, they are already on the way out. The sole and heel tread has worn down considerably, and the leather has cracked in places almost completely through, despite me giving them a regular proper polishing.
A shame, as I had such high hopes. My local cobbler was not surprised. He says everyone expects modern DMs to be the same as the original British ones, but in reality the new ones are made in Thailand to a much lower standard, and actually have a different construction. Apparently the old ones would last (almost) forever, but forget it with the new ones.
2 stars, as they did look good out of the box. At the end of the day they are no worse than those bought on the high street for about the same money (£55). But my expectation was that they would give me a good few years wear, which they evidently have not.
The Quality is here, superb strong smooth leather in a classic bold design
Amazing boots - not a scratch on the leather !!!!!
I bought a pair for work, at the start of the bad weather last year and have been wearing them ever since. I work in an office but spend a lot of time out and about, so I need footwear that is smart but practical. These are the first pair of boots I've owned since I was at school twenty years ago. A friend who is a security guard recommended DM's. He warned me that they need to be worn in, which took a few evenings.
Some days I've had them on for over 14 hours and they are comfortable from the time I put them on to taking them off at night. They look good with a suit or casual jeans. They are so easy to clean. A good polish once a week and if they get dirty in-between, a quick wipe over with a damp cloth does the trick.
The first day I wore them for work, I felt strangly self conscious, but I needn't have been, as I've had only good comments. Also two of my colleagues have bought a pair.
I didn't realise how comfortable DM boots can be. I've even treated myself to a pair of 10 hole lace up DM vintage boots, which are also excellent.
I highly recommend these boots.

These were worn by my son for 3 months, just at school, and by then the soles were in a worse state than his 1460s were after 20 months of school wear. Read morePublished on 3 Feb. 2013 by the mellie
