Biography

Originally formed in 1980, Pigbag burst into the charts and the public consciousness with their first single, “Papa's Got A New Pigbag”, a track that retains its dance floor appeal to this day. The band toured extensively in Europe, Japan and the United States, released two albums, appeared on 'Top of the Pops' twice and built a loyal fan base before they split ... I am ashamed to admit that I did not realize how brilliant this is - their first album in 1982 - until now. Amazingly, they somehow managed to be creative, artistic, fun and danceable all at the same time. A beautiful collection with bonus tracks and great sound. They don't make records like this anymore.

How wonderful to hear once again Ollie Taylor and chums performing their own unique brand of jazz-tinged percussive funk, replete with odd humorous interludes and renowned for the big horn section producing all manner of growls, grunts, groans, pig-like squeaks, squeals, pops, burps and yelps from the saxophones - great fun and real foot-tapping rhythms, brilliant to drive to! Personal favourite is Oranutango, though there are plenty of excellent tunes on this collection. Enjoy!

If James Brown were to front a post punk band he'd likely choose Pigbag. If you enjoyed the funkier side of The Pop Group, Pigbag is the next obvious step. All songs are instrumental, inflicted with hints of jazz and the advant-garde but still keeping the (funky) intensity of the Pop Group. (In fact Simon Underwood plays the bass). One key track to take note is "Papa's Got Brand New Pigbag".

Rather flat and passionless 6 May 2009

This record, recommended to me from someone who had talked with me about Maximum Joy's "Stretch", really fails to match up to the best of the early 1980s post-funk movement that ESG and Liquid Liquid produced. Pigbag will not be remembered as those bands will for a number of reasons.

First of all, their music lacks either the spontaneity of Liquid Liquid or the childlike beauty of so much ESG produced. Being without vocals is not necessarily a bad thing, but with Pigbag it leaves one feeling a great deal short because there is nothing to hook one. Even the funky rhythm that made "Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag" into a huge hit in Britain is nothing sensational compared to so much that came before or afterwards.

Secondly, Pigbag clearly had little more than their one trick shown here. The rest of "Dr. Heckle and Mr. Jive" (strangely there was a hit single by Australian pop band Men at Work with that title around the same time) is merely a less interesting repetition of the hit single without the hook that made it easy to listen to. They have no tricks to add to the potentially wonderful post-funk sound except a few horns that have been tried on this sort of song before. In short, there is nothing remotely special about this mediocre band.
