Product Description

Product Description

Dr. Brown's Natural Flow baby bottle was invented by a doctor and tested on his own children when they were babies, so you can be rest assured that this product is as safe as it is effective. This revolutionary baby bottle provides more comfortable feeding and helps colicky babies. This is what makes 9 out of 10 Healthcare Professionals recommend Dr Brown’s Natural Flow for Colic Relief*. Dr Brown's Natural Flow baby bottles are also widely used as a preventative measure against colic - why wait for your baby to experience colic? The Dr Brown’s Natural Flow baby bottles features a patented system with an internal vent designed to create a “vacuum free” environment. This patented internal vent system eliminates the vacuum and air bubbles found in most baby bottles. It allows air to enter through the teat collar, without being incorporated into the breast milk or formula. The air is then channelled through the internal vent system, to the area behind the feed. Babies are able to feed more comfortably because the vent allows babies to feed without fighting the negative effects of a vacuum or the discomfort of ingesting air bubbles. This reduces colic, burping and wind. 78% of Healthcare Professionals agree that the most common cause of colic in young babies is caused by digestive or feeding problems, including swallowing air*. The breast milk or formula flows freely through the teat as the air is channelled to the top of the bottle. This no-vacuum effect eliminates teat collapse. Over half of those changing to a Dr Brown’s Natural Flow baby bottle saw an improvement in 3 feeds or less, outperforming any other brand* *Results of a HCP Colic Survey carried out by Consumer Analysis Ltd. I have absolutely no doubt that these bottles work for some babies. The 9 other reviews suggest as much and the company would not be in existence if people were not buying their products and more importantly recommending them to others.

But.

We used these on our son. He got the same amount of wind as he used to with Avent (which we found to be better than most others). He gulped as much with these bottles and seemed to suck in as much air (if not more) as with the Avent teats.

I think one of the things as tired and harassed parents is that we look for a quick(ish) fix for our children especially when we see them suffer and theres very little we can do to help them.

Instead of hoping that a bottle with all manner of gadgetry will fix my son's wind problem, I have started to do two or three very simple things, which have helped him. I am happy to share these - so if you wish you can combine them with the use of these bottles:

1. when making up a feed, gently stir the mixture, to avoid mixing in air. I used to shake the bottles which added air. Now that I am stirring them, my son's wind has reduced

2. Check the teats for enlarged holes and its probably wise to change them once a month especially if you feed your child with a bottle at every feed. Larger holes will make the feed come out quicker which will make your child gulp resulting in more air being sucked in, which equals wind!

3. Feed, burp, feed, burp, feed, burp. I used to burp my son after his feed. Now, I usually burp him at least twice during the feed. If he is comfortable, he tends to drink more and tends to therefore finish his feed.

4.

We originally bought Tommi tippee bottles before our son was born. We bought these because they were advertised as 'closer to nature' which we thought was a good idea. Unfortunatly these gave the baby so much wind he could barely take any milk for the air in his stomach!! Which ment we were feeding him little and often and he was always extreme vomitting.
We read that Dr Browns were recommended by midwifes as a solution to winding issues. The air system works by having a tube run in the middle of the bottle from near the bottom up to an insert under the teat, which has side holes in the sides to let air in and out in to the threads. When you tip the bottle past the correct angle, the end of the tube at the bottom sits out of the milk so as baby drinks the air can fill in behind the milk thus stopping air bubbles coming through the teat.
The transformation was instant! While not completely getting rid of wind (some wind is very normal) we were able to feed the baby more in one go and winding took minutes, not 10's of minutes. You can't imagine how much of a relief this was, we all were able to get more sleep!.
There are some minor issues.
-You can't mix the formula properly in the bottles, the manual says to stir the powder in so not to clog up the air system. You can't mix formula adequetly by stirring, you have to shake!! We got round this by using our now redundant tommi tippee bottles for mixing then pouring into the dr Brown's.
-Another point is that you have to have the teat on losely when heating the bottle or the bottle will pressuize and some milk will go up the air system. You just have to remember to tighten it before testing on your wrist or you will pour the whole lot over yourself.

My baby has a sensative stomach, so we only use these bootles. They work fine, but they are a bit boring to clean...

The only good thing about these bottles is that they helped at the actual time of feeding. My baby was more settled drinking from these bottles and made less mess. As for the colic they did nothing. I have tried all types of bottles, changed milk, used Gripe water and Infacol and out of everything the only thing that remotely helped at all is Colief. Quite expensive but worth it.

I cannot tell you how much I hate these bottles. This is my second baby. My first baby who I breast fed until he was weened had colic for 4months and we went through hell and back with his colic, so when I had my second baby, I prayed that she wouldn't develop it. However at 2 weeks the tell tale signs started. Screaming after her feed, red in the face with her back arched. You know how it goes, it's horrible to see your little one screaming in pain. I persevered with the breast feeding for 6weeks, but by then it got too much so I swapped to the bottle hoping that this might help.
I tried Tommee Tippee bottles- no difference with the colic. I tried Avent Comfort Bottles, a small difference to the colic, and then I read so many positive reviews about Dr Browns bottles that I gave them a go. You will try anything to stop your little one from going through the pain of colic. However, I didn't like them at all for the following reasons;

They have so many different parts to them that they are ridiculously difficult to put together without touching any of the main parts that by the time you have put the bottle together I doubt very much that it's still sterile.

Because they have so many parts to them they are really fiddly to clean.

I found that when my daughter was trying to feed from them, the teat kept on retracting into the bottle. She was sucking furiously and getting no milk.

They didn't improve my daughters colic at all.

They leak terribly. I actually stopped using the Dr Browns bottles with my youngest baby as I didn't see an improvement in her colic at all, so rather than waste them, I used them for my 18month old (don't frown at me, he only has a comfort bottle of warm milk to go to bed) instead.
