This is a passionate book written by a man who survived type 1 Diabetes and made it his life's work to do the same. To this end, he retrained as a medial doctor at the age of 45. He knows full well that managing type 1 diabetes is a life or death situation and writes with great sincerity.

The book is full of good science as well as detailed practical information that someone with type 1 diabetes would find very helpful. If you are a type 2 diabetic, pre-diabetic, or simply worried that you might have diabetes, then this book contains a lot that you don't need to know. In this case, I'd suggest you start instead with Patrick Holford's Say No To Diabetes, which you will find more relevant.

Both books advocate a low carbohydrate diet as the means to normalising blood sugars. It's scandalous that the medical establishment still does not do the same.

Five stars if you are a type 1 diabetic, three stars otherwise.

This is an excellent book. It has clear instructions on how to control your diabetes and references to the science they are based on. I brought my own blood sugars under control in 3 weeks, establishing the truth of his words for myself. Many British people with type 2 diabetes will not be prescribed a blood sugar monitor or the strips that go with it but they are relatively cheap to buy and the strips can be bought on the Internet at more reasonable prices. Conversion to the American mg/dl from mmol/l is easy with tables available from diabetes uk or just divide by 18! I cannot recommend this book to highly to anyone with this condition. Would that our GPs and diabetes professionals would read it.

At long last diabetics have real help for their problem. The author gives realistic advice about the foods diabetics should consume and those which must be avoided: these guidelines disregard the unhelpful general advice given by the medical authorities, both in the UK and the USA, which simply ensure that a diabetic remains a diabetic. The content is extremely well presented with more than sufficient technical detail to enable the layman and the professional medic to understand and interpret the real issues surrounding diabetes and its causes whilst also offering sound advice on realistic treatment proven to work for diabetic patients. I wish I'd known about this book (and the author) when I was first diagnosed with diabetes 2. It would have helped me get on the way to controlling my diabetes so much more quickly and I would have received for longer all the benefits I now enjoy from following the book's recommended eating plan. I truly wish every medical practitioner who comes into contact with diabetes patients had a copy of this book and had read it!
