Book Description

Originally published in 1997, DR. BERNSTEIN'S DIABETES SOLUTION is a unique resource that covers both adult- and childhood-onset diabetes, explains step-by-step how to normalize blood sugar levels and prevent or reverse complications, and offers detailed guidelines for establishing a treatment plan. Readers will find fifty gourmet recipes, in addition to a comprehensive discussion of diet, obesity, and new drugs to curb carbohydrate craving and overeating.

Now in its fourth edition, the book presents up-to-the-minute information on insulin resistance, blood-testing devices, measuring blood sugar, new types of insulin, gastroparesis and other issues, as well as updated diet guidelines. DR. BERNSTEIN'S DIABETES SOLUTION is the one book every diabetic must own.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book has saved my life! 19 May 2002
Within just two weeks of purchasing this book my blood glucose readings have fallen from being consistently over 11 to 6 and I am sure that within another week they will have fallen still further! I have already lost 8lbs in weight and haven't felt hungry once! This is a fantastic solution to all my problems. I can now look forward with confidence to a bright and healthy future. I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes in January of this year and thought my world had come to an end. Following the recommended diet prescribed by my doctor my blood glucose levels were constantly high and I was constantly hungry! Dr Bernstein's wonderful book has probably saved my life and the lives of everyone else that I can persuade to read it. For British readers I would recommend that you keep a calculator handy and just divide the American Blood Glucose readings by 18 to get the British equivalent as it will make understanding the book just a little easier. I can heartily recommend this book. Don't hesitate. The only thing you have got to lose is your high blood glucose and a bit of excess weight - what's wrong with that! Go on, be in charge of your diabetes management at last. You will not regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Never thought I could, but I was WRONG!! 1 Feb. 1999
By A Customer
After 20 years of being a Type II diabetic, I had resigned myself to living with "OK" control...blood sugar levels averaging 200. Heck, my doctors were happy when I could manage to maintain 120 for a couple of weeks at a time. Since adhering to the dietary "rules" described in Dr. Bernstein's book (I started in October), my blood sugar levels have averaged 88; my energy level is higher, scratches and scrapes are healing faster, and my numb feet have regained a small level of feelings (not bad after loosing all feeling a number of years ago). While I don't expect this new level of control to cure everything that I managed to "screw-up" over the past twenty years, even the little steps are a major triumph. I recommend this book to ANYONE that has trouble controling blood sugars and has blindly trusted the traditional methods of diabetes control.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on controlling diabetes 14 Feb. 2012
This is an excellent book. It has clear instructions on how to control your diabetes and references to the science they are based on. I brought my own blood sugars under control in 3 weeks, establishing the truth of his words for myself. Many British people with type 2 diabetes will not be prescribed a blood sugar monitor or the strips that go with it but they are relatively cheap to buy and the strips can be bought on the Internet at more reasonable prices. Conversion to the American mg/dl from mmol/l is easy with tables available from diabetes uk or just divide by 18! I cannot recommend this book to highly to anyone with this condition. Would that our GPs and diabetes professionals would read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real diabetes help (at last) 17 April 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
At long last diabetics have real help for their problem. The author gives realistic advice about the foods diabetics should consume and those which must be avoided: these guidelines disregard the unhelpful general advice given by the medical authorities, both in the UK and the USA, which simply ensure that a diabetic remains a diabetic. The content is extremely well presented with more than sufficient technical detail to enable the layman and the professional medic to understand and interpret the real issues surrounding diabetes and its causes whilst also offering sound advice on realistic treatment proven to work for diabetic patients. I wish I'd known about this book (and the author) when I was first diagnosed with diabetes 2. It would have helped me get on the way to controlling my diabetes so much more quickly and I would have received for longer all the benefits I now enjoy from following the book's recommended eating plan. I truly wish every medical practitioner who comes into contact with diabetes patients had a copy of this book and had read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolutely Superb and Life-Changing Book 22 Aug. 2001
By A Customer
Dr. Berstein's treatment plan for diabetes (Type 1 in my case) is not for the faint-hearted but it is, beyond any doubt whatsoever, the most effective ever discovered. Bernstein, himself a Type 1 diabetic for fifty years, advocates a low carbohydrate diet, a multiple daily injection regime and an exercise regime. This regime stabilises blood sugars almost instantly and quite dramatically. I followed the traditionally prescribed 'high carbohydrate diet with two daily injections' regime until a year ago, and lived with all the horrors associated with it: severe hypos, highly erratic blood sugars, exhaustion, endless snacking, etc. One year on from following Dr. Berstein's regime and the transformation in my life and health has been quite dramatic. Twice this year I've had an HBA1C test done: first time it was 5.6; second time 5.2. My cholesterol levels have lowered and my consultant says I'm in great health. Bernstein's is a very tough regime: no bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, white flour, fruit, among other things, plus five daily injections. But it does work wonderfully, unlike the traditionally prescribed methods. If you really want to control this horrid condition and live a healthy normal life, or if someone you love has diabetes, then PLEASE buy this book immediately. I had tried everything and followed all the traditional advice and knew I was deteriorating. Now I'm healthier, stable, a thousand times happier, loving my work as a busy teacher and deeply grateful to this excellent man for his outstanding gift to Type 1 diabetics.
