5.0 out of 5 stars On The Up Side 23 Nov 2004
Format:Audio CD
Downside Up. A 4 disc, 55 song, (34 of which appear on CD for the first time) chronological collection, of every Banshee B Side, remastered. A 76 page booklet, an introduction by Mark Paytress (author of the recent official Banshees biography), a brief word from Siouxsie and individual notes for each track by Siouxsie, Budgie and Severin.
How long have we lived with these songs in one form or another?
Finally you can throw away your dusty, crackling vinyl, distorted, hissy cassettes and overpriced badly put together bootlegs, because this is the 'Real McCoy'.
Where to start? How about, forget everything you know and everything you've heard. Pretend you only have a basic knowledge of the Banshees from their classic singles. The upside to this is we can turn it all on its head and delve into the downside for the first time.
The Banshees started their recording career with the sprightly, poppy takeaway Hong Kong Garden, more pop than punk, more accessible than anyone dared dream of, and like a true Chinese Take Away, they served up the sour with the sweet on the flip side, Voices. This isn't pop its art, it's the perfect antidote, harsh, clashing guitar and Siouxsie's swooping vocal. This is where the journey begins. A journey that will take you almost full circle. From the experimental, the historical, the nostalgic, the sheer joy of being free of any restrictions.
So, what is a B Side? The A Side (topside) is generally a commercial, a preview, an introduction to the full feature, normally an album. The B Side (downside), can be any number of things, the only restrictions being a band's imagination or creativity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Banshees Jamboree arrives at last!! 23 Oct 2004
Format:Audio CD
THE single most-awaited collection for us Banshee freaks is almost finally here after some 12 years of rumour, speculation, false dawns, record company tangles and god only knows what else..... but the old saying that "good things always come to those who wait" certainly rings true in this respect, as we are finally treated to the full cornucopia of riches that has until now lain gathering dust in the record company vaults for far too long now - almost at one point destined to remain overlooked and forgotten. Let it just be said that Siouxsie remains perhaps the most enduring of all the post-punk heroines and, along with Patti Smith, would almost single-handedly influence the subsequent likes of PJ Harvey, Shirley Manson, Courtney Love, Horseface Morissette, Fiona Apple, Toni Halliday of Curve, et al...and yet to this day she and her Banshees remain criminally underappreciated when compared to the over-eulogised likes of their more celebrated - and commercially successful - contemporaries the Pistols, the Clash, the Stranglers and even the Damned to name but four....seemingly content to take fifth place in the punk punters' affections.
Whilst all the aforementioned have had countless annual greatest hits compilations, box sets and "anniversary" collections to their credit, the Banshees have at least resisted the urge to jump on that particular bandwagon due in no small part to their admirably tight sense of quality control over all their recorded output.....such that only two proper chronological greatest hits sets and one live album were ever issued before their "blink-and-you-missed-it" 2002 reformation (for "unfinished business") spawned a rather hastilly cobbled together - and therefore unessential - "Best Of" collection and subsequent commemorative live outing.

5.0 out of 5 stars THUMBS UP FOR DOWNSIDE UP! 30 Sep 2004
Format:Audio CD
The holy grail of Banshees fans for what seems like aeons, the much-sort-after B-sides from all the Banshees impressive singles between 1977 - 1996 have finally been dusted down, collected together and given their own identity, quite rightfully, in this quality box set. No more shall we have the crackles, pops and scratches that have long been present and become some what distracting... no more shall new comers to the band have to suffer the Ebay bootleg CDRs of vinyl transfers of questionable quality and substance... and no more shall we have to change the turntable every 8 minutes to move on to the next track! Already three perfectly good reasons to get this box set ordered a.s.a.p.!!!
But what of the content?
Well, if you're new to the band, then you're in for a treat. If you're a long-time fan, then similarly this set will be a treat... because these tracks have never sounded so good...
Like a lot of bands, the Banshees always seemed to have a lot of respect for the B-side and put as much time and thought into these extra tracks, just as much as they did to their A-sides or album material. I believe the band's manifesto for the B-sides was to have a contradictory or an oppositional theme or sound to the A-side it would couple with....
CD1 of this set starts right at the beginning and really does set the standard for what is to follow. 'Voices' is a caustic wail of sound which literally scratches and splinters the air, not at all like its A-side partner, 'Hong Kong Garden'. 'Pulled To Bits' regurgitates the childish laughter and cries of joy from the flipside and twists them to a new degree while 'Red Over White' employs a fairytale narrative which doesn't end happily ever after. 'We Fall' seeps and runs out of the speakers to intoxicate all too briefly.
