Downhill is a beautifully observed tragicomedy.
From beginning to end it is full of insight and humour.
A wonderful British treat.

At last: a British comedy with real soul, many laugh-out-loud moments but with a seam of tragedy running all the way through it. Better than WITHNAIL AND I but with the same qualities: memorable one-liners and brilliant acting. Unlike that film this analyses the failures and foibles of the middle aged man rather than two drunken wannabe 20-something actor so the pathos is that more poignant. While not a great deal happens (four old friends reunite to do Wainwright's coast to coast walk) DOWNHILL bears repeated viewings due to the detailed quality of the writing and the utterly believable performances. Have now watched it three times in two weeks. This is a real gem of a movie that is sure to become a cult classic. Loved it!!!

I absolutely loved this film; initially bought because I walked the Coast to Coast 30 years ago as a teenager and wanted a nostalgic trip down memory lane. It delivered that but so much more. Hugely funny and at times terribly sad, a beautiful examination of mid-life crisis, friendship and the struggles of living life in your late 40s with the echoes of one's youthful dreams and aspirations still ringing in the ears....... all from four very different viewpoints. A film I think I will return to again and again.

This is a film about friendship, which also happens to be, in passing, a love song to England. Filmed in the fashionable 'mockumentary' style, there is nothing otherwise remotely fashionable about it. Four friends, each with a problem which is never solved, walk from coast to coast, as they had done thirty years before. The absence of solution is partly the point: do you give up or do you keep buggering on, as Churchill put it. The moral of the tale is that you need friends to help you do that. This is a simple story of ordinary stoicism. It is very funny and equally moving; both acting and script are true to the ideas it expresses. The result is one of those triumphs that will lodge, fondly and permanently, in the memory of all those who are touched by it, which really ought to be everyone who sees it.

Rarely have I enjoyed a movie so much. A truly great British comedy well up there with Withnail and I. A bonus was the beautiful cinematography which used the Lake District scenery to full effect. Strongly recommended.
Why was this film not shown in my local cinema? A real indictment on the state of the cinema in Britain.

I absolutely love this film and am quite gutted that I missed it in the cinema. It is very insightful, warm yet hilarious and far too short.I could have carried on watching just to see how each individual character continues their own little life story. A great British film.

OMG, the trailers were funny enough, but the film, well worth watching. I won't tell you the story, but its based on the capers of four mid-life crisis men trying to recapture their long left behind youth....
