Product Description

Album Description

Berlin, April 1945. A nation awaits its downfall. Fighting rages in the streets of the capital. Hitler and his closest confidantes have barricaded themselves in the Fuehrer’s Bunker. Among them Traudl Junge, Hitler’s private secretary. While the situation outside escalates, Hitler experiences the downfall of the Third Reich behind thick bunker walls. Although Berlin can no longer be held, the Fuehrer refuses to leave the city. While the full force of the war crashes down over his folk, he stages his final departure. Only hours before their joint suicide, he marries Eva Braun, then their corpses are burned so that they do not fall into the hands of the enemy. Many of his faithful also choose suicide. As the situation becomes ever more hopeless, Magda Goebbels poisons her six children before she and her husband take their own lives. Shortly thereafter Traudl Junge and several others manage to escape at the last minute. Zacharia´s sombre music provides a weighty and dramatic backdrop to the desperation and the fury experienced in the last 12 days before the downfall in Berlin. The pensive music accentuates the fanaticism of a turbulent time in world history characterized by mayhem and bloodshed.

Downfall OST 26 Nov 2007
Format:Audio CD
Being a studier of Nazi History, I had my doubts about this film being made - but to my delight it was pulled off just right, and the same applies for the score. It's not an uplifting, orchestra thumping Indiana Jones style adventure score, but a sombre, reflective and very emotional piece of work. The use of strings by Zacharias is something of a masterpiece. Each track bursts with a solemn tone which beautifully compliments the helplessness and seer insanity of the situation the film portrays. It's an emotional rollercoaster, dotted with some traditional music sung by Dr Goebbels's children or a rather drunkenly sung Russian folk song. A must buy for any fans of the film or anyone who appreciates the classical styles which are very rarely used to proper effect nowadays.

The film moved me intensely paricularly at the end when the grim reality of the factual death toll of WWII,the Jewish "final solution" and the impact and consequences of such a horrific and tragic episode in history were displayed.

Stephen Zacharias has composed an exemplary masterpiece, the brooding underscore and source music represent a beautifully crafted orchestral journey that totally captivates the emotions and complexity of each element of the screenplay. "War is over!" and, "Hope at the end of the world!" being the most notable are almost Wagner-esque.

Joy,hope and death and the sheer hopelessness of the final hours are dealt with, with extreme sensitivity and indemnified in perhaps one of the most brilliant movies of the new millenium. The film and it's soundtrack are individually both outstanding achievements in there own right.

Even without the images the music is haunting, it invokes respect for the reality of the subject material and it's message. Undoubtedly it will move you to tears perhaps because one can't help but visualise and feel it's truth.

The truth that was and is a most poignant lesson in our history....J

After watching the film for the eleventh or so times, I decided to get round to buying the soundtrack and I'm very glad that I did.
It's so evocative and at the same time sorrowful, but please don't let that deter you from getting your hands on this ace CD, it's good at playing with your emotions and it will probably make you think of just about everything, I especially like 'In The Courtyard of the Reich Chancellery' and 'Hope at the end of the World.'
What made me get this CD was the part in the film where Traudl Junge cycles away into a new life with Peter sitting on the handle bars, the music was beautiful and fitted that scene brilliantly.
I can't say much more, other than this CD will be with me for a very long time.
