I have read a few books by this writer and there is consistency in the way they usually focus on a young girl and guy who after a series of unfortunate events(usually related to a hard family life) get together and live happily ever after.
The other thing they tend to have in common are the good attention to historical detail and events.
This book is a good holiday read. Its characters are believable and written well. There are goodies and baddies, happy and tragic events before arriving at what is a bit of predictable end. Despite this, to sum the book up in this way would be to do it injustice. It is an addictive book and the main characters are very human and easy to warm to. It depicts British events/way of life at that particular time very well indeed and you find yourself learning things about the past that maybe you didnt consider before, you start to see history through the eyes of ordinary people. A nice happy ending novel.
