Whilst browsing through an old copy of Rock and Reel magazine, I came across a review for this album, which included in the details the name of the record label the band were on. I did a double take at that moment. Fat Wreck? They're on a legendary punk label? What's going on there then? My interest was immediately piqued, and I hoped to find something with the musicianship of Streetlight Manifesto but in a different genre.

The bluegrass "Streetlight" would be an apt, if seemingly contradictory description for what I found. I liken them to that revered band more because of the fact that nobody does what Streetlight do as well as Streetlight do it - likewise with Old Man Markley. Too many bands are comfortable just releasing country/bluegrass pastiche songs or albums as a cynical way to make a play for broader appeal, or as a silly novelty song (something which you would think would only harm their reputation amongst fans of whatever genre they're ridiculing). Old Man Markley, however, are very different. They play bluegrass with a kind of punk sensibility, a racing beat to their music showing how much the genres actually have in common in the first place, whilst the vocals wouldn't sound out of place elsewhere on the Fat Wreck roster. Themes and lyrics obviously play an important part in this definition of the band, and tracks like Beyond the Moon (featuring the chorus line "Don't wanna lose my mind like Gary Busey did") would suit a Fat Mike sneer almost as well as they suit the melodious tones of Johnny Carey here.

As good as their first Album!

The Band/People?
Saw them in LA supporting (The Devil Makes Three & He's my brother Shes My Sister) and had the pleasure of meeting in London 2013, just a fantastic band and really down to earth a real nice bunch of people.

The Music?
Just buy the albums you will see! have converted a few friends not even into this genre of erm...country/punk? musicianship if excellent! Enjoy :D

Guts and Teeth > Down Side up 9 Mar. 2013
By James - Published on Amazon.com
A friend of mine lent me this (so I haven't bought it yet) but after listening once all the way I am kinda on the fence. It feels toned down compared to Guts & Teeth, not necessarly a bad thing but it just kinda just blends it with the rest of the bluegrass/country/rock stuff thats starting to get popular. If your thinking of getting into OMM try Guts and Teeth

I've seen these guys and gals twice live and was blown away each time. They are all SUPER nice. Their musical passion is totally evident on and off the stage. This 2nd album is going to sound very familiar in style to their first, which to me means high energy, thoughtful lyrics, solid musicianship, and a delicate balance between the funny and the serious. Their self-proclaimed "Whisky Drenched Bluegrass" descriptor is right on.

Old Man Markley really is one my wife and my favorite bands and this album is a continuation of their fun and talent filled debut album.
