5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable read 20 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book following a newspaper review which appeared just before Christmas. Having recently purchased a motorcycle again after a long period away from the sport, I was searching for a book which would rekindle a feel for those halcyon days before the ultimate demise of the British motorcycle industry, a time I well remember. By a careful mix of nostalgia, industrial history and personal recall Steve Wilson manages to achieve all that for me, together with the very evocative drawings of Nicholas Ward. It proved an ideal bedtime book with the length of each chapter just about coinciding with my shortened span of night time concentration. I thoroughly recommend the book to all born-again bikers and those with a passion for British bikes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Down the Road 5 Jun 2003
Format:Hardcover
If you are over fifty and love classic motorcycles, don't give this book a miss. The drawings by Nick Ward, although comical, are in a class of their own. The attention to detail comes only from exceptionally talented artists.
The writer has researched this subject so thoroughly, one gets a first hand straight and direct insight into the just how these machines came to be.
If you are lucky enough to own a classic, you will know it even better having read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most excellent for the vintage Brit bike admirer 18 July 2004
Format:Hardcover
I can only second the previous opinions seen below, it is a great collection of articles and antidotes. And yes Nick Ward's drawings are a constant amusement for anyone who has or has had a classic bike of their own. This makes a wonderful gift for the old bike lover in your family... yerself, perhaps?
Simply wonderful. Hoping for a second volume from Steve and Nick...

I really identifed with author of this book especially the love my bike/hate my bike section at the begining. But a good read for any body interested in old British bikes and the short chapters make it easy to pick and put down.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read 10 Feb 2008
By R. Langgard - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Down the Road is an entertaining book. Steve Wilson has written a series of short stories or articles concerning various classic British motorcycles. Some of them are adventure stories about rides on these bikes. Others are historical in nature, based on interviews with individuals involved in the post-WWII British motorcycle industry. For those of us interested in these bikes and the collapse of that industry, it is a must read. The illustrations are good too.

Excellent articles on the Ace Cafe in London and the history of Plumstead's AMC (Matchless, AJS, Norton...) factory and it's demise.

If you're just nuts about old bikes, I'd say grab one of these, though some of the models discussed are seldom seen-typical chatty U.K. writing.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! 6 Nov 2012
By Bill J. from Austin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
For those who cherish obsolete, oil-spattered, cantankerous (and thoroughly soul-satisfying) old motorcycles, Steve Wilson's collection of previously-published magazine essays will delight. He has an easy familiarity with the history of classic marques and the men who built and rode them. He can describe the scenes - the sights, the smells and sounds of the open road - so vividly that you can almost feel the vibration of the motor beneath you, and taste the bugs in your teeth!

If you're one of us - the mad, grease-stained wretches who KNOW machines can have souls, and love them all the more for all their supposed flaws - you WILL enjoy Down the Road: Genuine Mileage On Classic Motorcycles!
